A couple weeks ago, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio sent a letter to the director of the Selective Service System, asking to let his "birther" posse play detective with President Obama's registration card.
Arpaio laid out his whole stamp conspiracy-theory in the two-page letter, and demanded a response within 30 days.
As you can imagine, the Selective Service official who responded to Arpaio said no.
If Arpaio can come up with "any credible evidence" -- which, from what we've seen so far, is extremely unlikely -- then he'd have to go to the FBI for that.
"This Agency has no evidence that President Obama's 1980 registration is not authentic," writes Richard Flahavan, the associate director of public affairs at the Selective Service. "However, if you have any credible evidence to the contrary and believe that a Federal crime has been committed, we suggest that it be turned over immediately to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to pursue."
Instead of taking any shred of "credible evidence" to the FBI, Arpaio wrote to the Selective Service again, asking the agency to let his "birther" bozos play with the president's registration card.
Were there "any credible evidence" in Arpaio's investigation, one would assume that he'd follow the advice of the Selective Service and turn that over to the FBI.
Seeing as there isn't "any credible evidence" to prove any sort of crime has been committed, Arpaio's still going through the Selective Service.
"Please allow me to clarify my original request, sent March 19, which asks for a simple response from you," Arpaio writes. "If your office has the original, authentic Selective Service registration form for Barack Obama from July 29, 1980, please indicate whether or not you have possession of this document.
"If the document is in your possession, please make it available for inspection by my Sheriff's Office investigators. We will travel to your facility to analyze it."
Not surprisingly, Arpaio hasn't been releasing his most recent round of "birther" material through the sheriff's office, instead going through his "birther" investigation's propaganda arm over at World Net Daily.
Arpaio just headlined another book tour presentation for his "birther" associates this weekend, claiming to draw more than 1,000 people (of course, in Sun City) to talk about that brown-tinted gentleman in the White House, so it doesn't look like this one's ending any time soon.
On the other hand, if anyone wants to draw up the petition demanding Arpaio release his records, we'd be happy to deliver that to him.
