If you've never been, you're in for a treat.
The small shop is located on the southeast corner of Van Buren Street and 33rd Avenue. It was formerly known as El Nuevo Taquito until 2015, when it rebranded as Taqueria El Fundador. The all-important recipes, however, stayed the same.
Find a parking spot in the small, horseshoe-shaped lot that surrounds the taqueria. Head inside and peruse the menu displayed on screens above the counter. There are tacos, tortas, tostadas, quesadillas, sides and a selection of entree plates. The tacos come in multiple flavors, including meaty and rich cabeza, carne asada with just the right amount of char, juicy carnitas and a simple chicken option.
The tacos al pastor are the star of the show. Marinated meat spins on a trompo just behind the counter. It's cut fresh to order in long strips. The tender, flavorful meat is mixed with grilled onions and topped with a few cubes of pineapple. When ordered with everything on top, it comes with diced raw onions, cilantro and a drizzle of red salsa.
Add a squeeze of lemon, maybe a little more of that roasty salsa, and dig in. The small, double-layered corn tortillas hold up to their hearty fillings, creating a few delicious meaty, tangy, spicy bites. Pro tip: However many tacos al pastor you think you'll need, order at least one more.
And if you want to feast on these delicious street tacos for an extraordinary price, head to Taqueria El Fundador on Tuesdays, when most of the taco flavors, including the al pastor, are just $1.50.
Round out your meal with a side of stewed homemade beans topped with melty cheese, and order a creamy horchata or refreshing pineapple agua fresca to wash it all down.
The small dining room buzzes on Tuesday nights, with generations of families who have been coming here for decades. Just like the menu says, "los que saben, saben."
