Arizona has plenty of old Western saloons dating back to the days when cowboys roamed the dirt roads. But not all of our historic spots are crusty and dusty.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation commemorates historic hotels through its Historic Hotels of America program. And for the first time, the website released a list of the top 25 most historic bars, taverns and speakeasies.

"This collection of 25 bucket list lounges and pubs located in historic hotels across the United States highlights the ways in which history can be experienced through expertly crafted drinks, live entertainment, and good company," the list explains.

And from that total of 25, two spots are in Arizona.

Lon's Last Drop, located within Paradise Valley's Hermosa Inn, earned a spot. The hotel was originally constructed in 1935 by cowboy and artist Lon Megargee. He built the gorgeous property as his home and studio and used mostly adobe bricks and local building materials.

The hotel now includes 43 casitas, a pool, restaurant and more. The restaurant and bar are located in the original studio space, which maintains "much of the studio’s original character, offering guests a rare glimpse into Arizona's artistic and architectural heritage," the list explains. "The bar features exposed sections of Megargee's original adobe walls, allowing guests to see the hay, straw, and clay composition that was typical of the era. The original adobe fireplace remains a focal point, evoking the warmth and spirit of Megargee's time."

The bar also displays some of the artist's paintings, including his most famous, "The Last Drop From His Stetson." Stetson Hat Co. commissioned the painting over a century ago.

The list recognizes the bar's signature cocktail, the Last Drop, which includes whiskey, apricot liqueur, sweet vermouth and blood orange.

"It honors Megargee’s wild spirit, while offering a refined taste of the region that he called home," the list says of the drink. "LON’s Last Drop blends rustic charm with understated elegance. It is known for its warm, welcoming ambiance—a place where locals and travelers alike gather under candlelight. With its handcrafted textures, historical details, and Southwestern spirit, the atmosphere is relaxed yet refined: intimate, story-filled, and unmistakably Arizona."

The other historic spot on the list is located in Prescott, a town famous for its history and historic bars. The Glass Bar at the Hassayampa Inn, a hotel built in 1927, is recognized for its dirty martinis and history of hosting live musicians.

As Phoenix booms and new bars and restaurants open all the time, there's something extra special about our historic haunts. Belly up to the bar and order a cold drink, just as generations have done before you.
