ASU football is back. Catch the game at these Valley restaurants and bars

With watch parties, drink deals and game-day eats, these local spots are celebrating the return of Sun Devil football.

Saturday marks the return of football in the desert. The Arizona State Sun Devils take on Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at 7 p.m. from Mountain America Stadium. If you can’t be in Tempe to see the game in person, bars and restaurants around the Valley have saved a spot for you.

Check out these seven taverns to cheer on Arizona State University with a full beer, gameday eats and some savings.

Backyard will kick off the Sun Devils home opener with Huss Brewing Co., producer of the official craft beer of ASU Athletics. Backyard’s massive dining room feels like the biggest outdoor barbecue, full of patio-style seating but souped up for sports with huge TV screens and multiple bars. Fans can score 16-ounce pours of Devil’s Halo Lager or 100-ounce towers for $35 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at both Valley Backyard locations.

The game won’t be the only good view at Skyskill Rooftop Lounge. With almost 360-degree views of the Valley’s wondrous Superstitions to Camelback Mountain, it’s the perfect spot to arrive ahead of the game. On Saturday, Skysill’s tailgate party kicks off at 4 p.m. Bartenders will mix up on-theme Sun Devil Smashes and Fork ‘Em Fizzes, and serve buckets of beers or seltzers for $35. Other gameday fun will include tailgate games, a football-themed photobooth, live DJs and a raffle for two tickets to the next home game on Sept. 13.

The Tempe-born brewpub Pedal Haus Brewery shows its Sun Devil pride with a massive mural at the flagship location just minutes from the stadium. The Tempe location also boasts plenty of TVs, an expansive patio and cabanas. Pedal Haus’ other pubs, in downtown Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler, are likewise gearing up for game day. No matter where you watch, expect flowing local craft brews and tailgate-approved wings, burgers and nachos.

Glenrosa, the Sonora-inspired restaurant and bar at Grass Clippings Rolling Hills Golf Course, will host a watch party at its outdoor bar. The party gets started at 6 p.m. with lawn games and food and drink specials, including $5 Desert Sunrise and Desert Sunset cocktails or the Devil’s Duo – a beer and a shot of tequila.

Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers has long been a destination for watching sports. This year, CBCB has teamed up with ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson on dishes that will benefit Phoenix Children’s. Starting Saturday, diners can order the QB10 Wrap, a buffalo chicken wrap with romaine, tomato, ranch, shredded cheese and your choice of grilled or Nashville hot chicken, or Tyson’s Touchdown Sandwich, topped with chicken tenders tossed in sweet chili sauce, lettuce, tomato and a honey mustard spread. These specials are available all season at all Valley locations except Chase Field, and 10% of the sales of these specials will go to the children’s hospital.

North Peoria’s Lakeside Bar & Grill is launching a roster of new, over-the-top dishes on College Saturday. Assemble your squad to take down the towering Gridiron Monster Burger – four beef patties, a crispy chicken breast, bacon, cheddar and pepperjack, onion rings and mozzarella sticks, topped with chipotle ranch, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. The burger comes with a pound of fries and dipping sauces. There’s also the more demur First Down Sampler with potato boats, chicken strips, mozzarella sticks and chips and salsa or the Victory Formation Tower of onion rings. The restaurant will be ready for football fans starting at 9 a.m. with a bloody mary cart, $3 pours of Huss’ Devil’s Halo Lager and $3 domestics.
