The Upton Opens Today in Former Petite Maison Space in Scottsdale -- Here's the Menu

In the blink of an eye -- ok, more like two weeks -- the little house that was once Petite Maison has been transformed into a sleek, vibrant new restaurant. Called The Upton, the new dining destination features the talents of former Petite Maison sous chef Chris Schlattman, who's teamed up with co-owners Sean Zimmerman, Bran Oberg, and Pouria Malihi on the new concept.

As of today the restaurant is open for dinner with plans to add Sunday brunch and supper by the beginning of next month.

The most obvious change to the building is the addition of a large back patio with lounge seating and tables for about 40 people. A planter, bright accent pillows, and a large mural give the space the feel of an urban oasis while inside you'll find a new sleek design that blends natural and modern materials.

Zimmerman, a co-owner who will also be the restaurant's general manager, says the idea was to create a place that falls in-between Old Town Scottsdale's nightlife options and fine dining establishments. The goal: appeal to the "urban foodie."

On the food side, Schlattman says he's created a globally-influenced and "chef-friendly" menu that's still designed to be relatable to the average diner. The price point ranges from $5 for handcut fries and garlic aioli to $17 for a bistro steak with caramelized sweet onions and smoked sea salt.

Schlattman spent the last two years working under chef James Porter and prior to that the chef worked around town with Aaron May and Lee Hillson. The self-taught chef says his main influences come, however, from the time he spent working in Chicago under chefs including Grant Achatz at his Michelin-starred restaurant, Alinea.

And the restaurant's name, in case you were wondering, isn't arbitrary. It's an homage to Upton Machine Company (which later became Whirlpool) and its founder Louis C. Upton. The electric washing machine mogul eventually moved to Arizona and set up home in what's now downtown Scottsdale. His house, designed by architect Paul Schweikher, was even used as a speakeasy and grill during the 1950s and 60s, Schlattman says.

For now The Upton will be open for dinner only though Zimmerman says the plan is to add Sunday brunch and supper by the first week of December. Sunday supper will be a family-style meal to encourage a community feel through shared plates.
