Rosa is a thin, elegant woman who works as a legal secretary to a well-known immigration lawyer in the Valley. She hails from an upper-middle-class family in Mexico. Her mother is a lawyer. Her father's a doctor and former politician. She practiced law in Mexico and studied English in New York with an eye toward pursuing a master's degree in international law in Spain.

Love intervened, however. Rosa, 33, met her husband, "a white boy," she calls him, while in New York. Eventually they married and moved to Phoenix so he could get his master's degree at ASU. He makes a living as a financial adviser for a large firm. Last year, he gave her a new BMW for her birthday. They own a house in an Anglo neighborhood, where she's the only Hispanic on the street.

Rosa's husband is a U.S. citizen. She's a legal permanent resident, on her way to becoming a citizen herself. She plans to raise a family and go back to school. But she's thinking twice about doing either in Arizona after her run-in with two sheriff's deputies a couple of months ago. Indeed, Rosa remains so fearful that she didn't want her real name used for this article.

"I have a lot of things to lose," said Rosa, seated catlike on a chair in her office. "I don't want to put myself or my husband in any kind of situation where we might have the slight chance to have problems. Or not have piece of mind."

Rosa was racially profiled by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office while driving home from a friend's house in Fountain Hills, the town where Sheriff Joe Arpaio lives. Her friend's little girl had just turned 1, which was the cause for the party she'd attended. Rosa was dressed to the nines, wearing sunglasses against the afternoon sun, and chewing gum — activities that would not normally draw the attention of law enforcement.

A couple of minutes into her drive, a sheriff's car began following her. Rosa wondered what was up but drove carefully and at the speed limit. The deputies in the car finally hit the lights and pulled her over. She knew something was weird when two hulking figures approached, one on either side of her vehicle. The one on the driver's side had his hand on his holster, keeping it there almost the entire time he talked to her.

"So I roll down my window," said Rosa, "and he goes, 'Can I see your documents?' I'm like, 'Oh, sure,' and I grab my purse. I grab my driver's license, and my registration card. I hand them to the guy, and he says, 'No, can I see your documents?'"

"I said, 'What do you mean, my documents?'" she recalled.

"He said, 'You know, your [immigration] documents.'"

"I said, 'No you can't, you're not ICE.' And I hand him one of my business cards. It doesn't say my name, it has my boss' name. I said, 'I work for an immigration law firm. I know you cannot ask me this.'"

Rosa demanded to know why he stopped her. He insisted she'd been drinking. She knew she had not, so she asked him how he'd deduced this. He told her that it was because she was wearing sunglasses and chewing gum.

"I said, 'Yes, I cannot see, the sun is on my face, and I'm chewing gum because I just ate at a party.' By that time I was shaking. My voice was shaking. I was very nervous. I'm thinking these two guys can do anything to me, and nobody's even going to know. Nobody was driving past, nothing."

The deputy asked why she was nervous. She shot back that it was because they were two big guys, and that he had his hand on his gun.

The deputies took her license and registration back to their car and ran it. As the registration was in her husband's name, she surmised that they'd figured out she was married to an Anglo. The deputies returned, the one with the gun fixation gave Rosa her license and registration back.

"You have to understand," he advised her, "that my people have to make sure your people are not hiding bodies in your trunk."

"I'm like, 'Wow,'" she thought. "And then he goes, 'It looks like you are one of the few that knew how to make it in this country. Because just look at your car, look at you — you look like you did it right.'

"I thought, 'I cannot believe this.' And then he said, 'Just for today, we are going to let you go.'"

"They left, and I was like, 'Ugh, what just happened here?'"

Rosa's husband was so mad that he wanted to hit somebody. Her father and mother argued she and her husband should move back to New York, where she'd never encountered blatant racism. There had been another incident before the one in Fountain Hills, in which a neighbor mistook her for a cleaning lady, working at what was in fact the new home she'd just bought.

MCSO is just a branch of the SS troops of the Nazi dogs, in plain site! Hahaha. Deputy Joe....enough said. Or barny fife.

  • Matt 11/01/2009 3:49:00 PM

You have to remember you are hearing one side of the story. The truth lies somewhere inbetween the lines. If she works for an immigration lawyer, then a complaint should have been filed. She of all people would be able to fight any retaliation. This story does not add up The moral of the story is, all "white boys" should beware of latinas dressed to the nines wearing sunglasses and chewing gum!

  • RichieC 10/21/2009 8:57:00 PM

John from Tacoma, most "americans' of mexican descent" do agree that people should come here legally. This isn't the problem, it's when we're getting stopped for no reason at all other than the color of our skin or how we look I don't think it's ok now or was it ok 50 years ago. Why doesn't the sheriff stop white people, hey maybe they're here illegally from germany or canada how about blacks or asians we have a few of those illegal types coming here too but you don't hear stories of the sheriff's officers stopping and harassing them. We already have guys like Russell Pearce in the legislature, when we start giving power to racists like him and Arpaio we might as well start hanging signs on our restaurants again that say' Whites Only". I remember those days and I don't think you want to go there again.

I am 54yrs old, born and raised in Phoenix AZ. I lived there until 2000. I am an American of Mexican decent which makes me a Chicano not a Mexican-American or a Hispanic. Its about time the police, sheriff, DPS or immigration start checking people they think might be in this country illegally. Immigration has been checking questionable people for years on I-8 between Gila Bend and El Centro. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, I was numerous times for reasons like; looked like someone, was dress like someone or the best one was why was I in a neighborhood that was north of McDowell. Then in my late teens, early twenties, I would be pulled over because looked too young to be driving or my break light(s) were out. Once I was pulled over on I-17 at night. I was going north and DPS was going south, the speed limit was 75MPH and it was dark but somehow that officer going south (and me going north,) he was able to see that I looked like someone they were looking for. Back then immigration had the RIGHT to do raids/visit any business that might be hiring undocumented residents. They would come down with vans or buses and if you could not speak English clearly or could not answer the questions they asked you in English, your behind was going back. There were undocumented Mexicans, but they were here to work and send the money back to Mexico for their family. They weren't here to live off welfare, get HUD housing; those people were the real Mexicans who just wanted something better for the families in Mexico. So think about it, the reason that you got pulled-over or are being profiled is because of the illegal allies who are here just to get what they can for nothing and don't respect Americans or America!!! They aren't here to give their families a better life back in Mexico. Also remember that nice house you live in, in that all white neighborhood, the next time you go on vacation those illegal's you are fighting for will be living in your house, sleeping everywhere, shitting everywhere, breaking everything and taking everything you had worked legally for. Oh before you start talking shit about me, here is a little about me, I retired from the Army after serving 25 yrs, I am 90 percent disabled but still work. My annual gross income is in six (6) figures not counting my wife income. Oh, NewsTimes folks, if you want to check me, I will be more than happy to talk with you. Thank you for your time, God bless America and all of it members who are serving or have serve in the Military.

Chris, you're being silly here. She refused to provide citizenship documents, knowing that she didn't have to since she had provided a valid driver license, registration and proof of insurance. However, she was being detained and she was wise enough to sit it out until the dep a ty told her he was going to let here go, "at least for today", or whatever.

  • Chris Long 10/20/2009 2:19:00 PM

Where the hell do you expect to find Illegal Hispanics, except among Hispanics ? The story here is too neat, too front-loaded with racism/victim culture....I smell a rat ! She could have asked "Am I Free to go" and driven away almost any time -- why didn't she ?

  • Chris Long 10/19/2009 9:53:00 PM

  • Naui Huitzilopochtli 10/18/2009 8:28:00 PM

Rosa makea compliant you have it easy compared to your "paisano's"

  • akw 10/18/2009 1:59:00 PM

I hope "Rosa" reviews the meaning of "perjury" before she tries to spin this tale to the authorities.

  • Coz 10/17/2009 3:36:00 AM

Well, thank you for that... >>"OK, we might have "jumped the gun" on Coz. He's not usually one to hide behind others' blog tags.

Uh, does it make any sense that illegals waking/driving around look like Mess-kins ? Hey, I have been asked to prove I am a citizen several times this year... Another NT Bleeding Heart victim story, featuring illegals as the victims.

  • James 10/17/2009 2:09:00 AM

During an interview with Rick Sanchez of CNN Sheriff Arpiao claimed he was able to decide who should be questioned of their immigration status by the language that person spoke and by the clothes that they were wearing. Wake up people. Are we deaf and blind? Even if we set aside the imigration question, just for a second, and examine what this man is saying and doing it is clear that he is violating the civil rights of the people he is meant to serve. I truly wonder what someone with the character of Martin Luther King Jr. would say about what is happening today in the desert of Arizona or in the courthouses of Louisiana for that matter. I truly beleive he might weep, but such tears as he might have shed would only have steeled his resolve and determination to right this wrong. Are there any brave men today who have the courage to stand up to such a man as Sheriff Joe? The careers of those who have tried litter the courthouses of our county. Hey! Mr. President, there is a Villian who oppresses us! Can't someone - anyone do something?

  • TommyC 10/16/2009 10:28:00 PM

Mr. Lemons, while this incident seems 'typical' and can be expected, given the culture being bred within MCSO, I can only hope you validated that actual traffic stop and aren't taking this person at her word. Please, don't get me wrong, I don't doubt this happened, but if this incident is picked up as part of the DOJ investigation it's important that it's validated prior. The traffic stop, along with the names of the deputies, should be available via a public information request with the date, time and location of the stop. I am astounded that any police officer would feel the need to ask for citizenship documents during a traffic stop where driver license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance were already tendered. I guess being Hispanic in a BMW is a crime in Maricopa County, huh? Well, at least in the Fountain Hills area, where the Flaccid Wonder abides. It really would be nice to see the names of the deputies in print.... They certainly deserve recognition.

  • Stoller and Associates 10/16/2009 7:06:00 PM

The Associates admitted that they may have "jumped the gun" on Coz: "OK, we might have "jumped the gun" on Coz. He's not usually one to hide behind others' blog tags. We stand behind the previous comments about this Latina golddigger. Frankly, we couldn't care less about the bimbo. Lemons again is fantasizing and writing about women he can never have. It has nothing to do with immigration. Maybe she'll give him a mercy f**k - for half his paycheck!" HMG on the blog.

  • David 10/16/2009 5:48:00 PM

Wow, I couldn't care less about imposters and other distractions. This is a woman who is 100% legal and the racist nutjobs in the sherrif's dept want to make her feel grateful that she isn't getting taken in. Arizona is just like the south in the 1950's. This is the same sherrif's dept that went to Guadalupe (which is an Indian reservation) and started going after people whose families have been here for several hundred years (before the United States). If you are going to use the same rule, go arrest Arpaio since he is second generation immigrant (that's right racists, his family are immigrants). Next time you go to church, look up Matthew 25:31-46) and tell me how you think you are living a good life. That's right, some people just hate in this town because its easier to play the victim card than acknowledge responsibility for their actions.

  • Coz 10/16/2009 9:12:00 AM

Nope, I'm not the imposter here or the idiot... Sorry Ass & Assoicates...but you appear to be the only idiot and retard here at this point.

  • Coz 10/16/2009 9:07:00 AM

No, I am not an imposter idiot... As far as I can tell, you're the only idiot and retard here ass & associates. >>The Associates respond to the response of the Imposter "Stoller and Associates:" "Imposter, believed to be "Coz" or similar idiot, it's clear that we never make posts like that.

  • State of Fear AZ 10/16/2009 5:52:00 AM

The abuse of power in Maricopa County is out of control. This is another case that confirms it. It puts all at risk for the same. Wake up Arizona, you are being steam-rolled over by your elected politicos who have politicized justice and are nothing more than Third World dictators.

  • Stoller and Associates 10/15/2009 10:33:00 PM

The Associates respond to the response of the Imposter "Stoller and Associates:" "Imposter, believed to be "Coz" or similar idiot, it's clear that we never make posts like that. Get a new gig." HMG on the blog.

  • Stoller and Associates 10/15/2009 7:18:00 PM

The Associates further respond; FFFFFFFFPPPPPPPPPPPTTTTTTTTT! There, our mind is clear again, thanks to releasing that flatulence! Now we can continue with our racist rants!

  • Stoller and Associates 10/15/2009 6:27:00 PM

The Associates respond, "Let's get to the real issues here. "Rosa" was probably blowing a .035 BAC when she was stopped. Instead of going to the ACLU or an immigration attorney, she should check in to a good detox and rehab. Notice how "Rosa the Golddigger" refers to her husband as a "white boy." In her case it's a playful, innocent remark made about the dope she's ripping off and doesn't love. However, often the racist Latinos maliciously use the phrase to attack and degrade White people. A good example occurred during Salvador Reza's childrens' march, where he had a "token" White young lady with blonde hair march with the Hipanic/Latino kids. The ignorant Reza sterotyped her as a rich White girl from Fountain Hills, implying that all Whites are wealthy and live in the suburbs. Reza's worldview is severely restricted due to his racist and segregated upbringing in Mexico and South Phoenix. He probably believes these stereotypes." HMG on the blog.

  • CooperG 10/15/2009 5:26:00 PM

Someone should be buying billboards to advertise this is happening. It needs to be someplace where Arapio can't stop it.

  • Native Arizonan since 1956 10/15/2009 4:26:00 PM

"Just for today we're going to let you go"? WTF kind of unprofessionl non-law enforcement kind of bullshit talk is THAT? Did these guys get their training at the feet of their master, Sheriff Joe and his two ton underling Hinderblimp? Of course you let her go, you stooges! She was and is guilty of NOTHING, there was NO probable cause to pull her over and she IS a legal and permanent resident. And I HOPE she sues the living hell out of MCSO!

  • Coz 10/15/2009 3:45:00 AM

She really needs to file a complaint with DOJ. This kind of open blatant racist in your face bullshit needs to stop. Someone needs to put leashes on Bozo Joe and his dirtbag Goons....

  • Raoul Duke 10/14/2009 11:25:00 PM

I hope the DOJ has a chance to interview this lady.
