SantarchyA hundred or so pub crawlers dressed as jolly old St. Nick went in search of booze in a bar hop they affectionately refer to as Santarchy. Not enough Santa for you? The big man himself also made a stop at Salty Senorita in Peoria this weekend brining a mound of snow with him. Violet Wild at Last Exit It's nearly 1 a.m. and I'm a few drinks into the night. I'm at Tempe's Last Exit Bar & Grill to watch Violet Wild, one of my favorite local pop-rock bands who used to play anywhere an

  • Curtains: Miracle on 34th Street at Theater Works

Kelly Leeth and Fred Bornhoeft are adorable in Miracle on 34th Street. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he was heard mildly cursing into his body mic during a quick backstage costume change last Saturday night in Peoria. But he shouldn't feel bad. Seriously, actor Fred Bornhoeft is such an awesomely wonderful Kris Kringle that his little audio faux pas (in which the sound crew collaborated by not killing the microphone when he exited) was soon forgotten. And that was

  • New in Peoria: WineStyles

A free wine tasting, a champagne toast, a bottle signing by winemaker Robert Pepi Jr., and complementary hors d'oeuvres from Fleming's Steakhouse are four good reasons to hit up tonight's grand opening party for WineStyles in Peoria. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Located at Park West, the new open-air shopping center at the northwest corner of the 101 and Northern, WineStyles is a national franchise known for organizing its wines by style and color instead of varietal or region.

  • Peoria Cops Seeks Suspected Scammers

Calling all cars: Be on the lookout for a peacoat-wearing mom-type in glasses and a smiley, plump girl. This pair may not be Public Enemy #1 and 2, but they're accused of the type of crime that probably makes their victims want to commit aggravated assault. According to Peoria PD, these two began an attempted check-cashing and successful gift-card-buying spree based on the personal identification stolen in a vehicle burglary.

  • Hot Links: DPS Says N. Ariz. Snowstorm Worst in Its History; Feds Building "Virtual Fence;" Buckeye Council Politics Turn Ugly

Snow party: The state Department of Public Safety calls yesterday's snowstorm in northern Arizona the worst it has ever faced. The feds are building 53 miles of "virtual fence" along the border with Mexico that virtually works. Phoenix is No. 1! (In hotel vacancies -- not good). Peoria police are seeking a man suspected of stabbing two women. Buckeye town politics heats up. Not being able to re-enact a war is hell. • New Restaurant Round-Up

Somebody recently mentioned restaurant closings to me, and I had to wrack my brain to think of the most recent casualties. For now, the news is actually pretty upbeat -- the last month has seen a flurry of new restaurants opening in the Valley. Here's the lowdown. Second Line Creole Cuisine opened in South Phoenix a little over a month ago, followed by downtown's PastaBar, whose menu is evident in the name. Open Gallery Bar & Grill debuted near 7th Ave and Camelback, with a Caribbean-So

  • Peoria Bank Robber Cuts Hole In Wall, Surprises Bank Employees Arriving for Work

Holy bank robbery, Batman! (Or maybe it should be hole-y). Cops and the FBI are looking for a robber with above-average planning skills who forced the employees of a Peoria bank to open a cash vault. On Tuesday morning, the man broke into a Christian bookstore right next to the Chase Bank at 8978 W. Union Hills, where he'd cut a hole in the wall at some earlier date, say Peoria police in a news release (reprinted below). When bank employees arrived, he crawled

  • Mobile Phone in Kid's Pocket Calls Police as He Brags of Burglaries; Found With Hot Stereo in Hands

Machines turning on their human masters: It sounds like the plot of science fiction movie, but it actually happened to a Peoria punk who police say likes to burglarize vehicles. The 16-year-old was bragging to his homies about stealing from a car when his mobile phone spontaneously called the police. Perhaps his phone had a one-touch button to call 911, or the kid dialed the numbers by mistake while scratching himself. But little did the chatty guy know, cops b

City of PeoriaIt's good to have friends like the City of Peoria. The city developed a relationship with Long Beach, Mississippi, after the Gulf Coast town was ravaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, (the same storm that wiped out New Orleans). Peoria donated office equipment and vehicles to help the municipal government get back on its feet. Four years later, Peoria found itself with an extra mobile command vehicle, which is like an office on wheels for use in emergencies. That's Long Beach

The enforcement efforts are aimed at reducing vehicle collisions on what is considered "one of the most deadly holidays for motorists," says Peoria PD. All motorists will be stopped at the Lake Pleasant checkpoint and looked over by cops. In Arizona, drivers can get a DUI for being impaired to the "slightest deg

Donna Collum had been with the city of Peoria since 2000, working first in the fleet department and, in 2003, becoming a police services officer.

  • Peoria Cop Shoots at Rifle-Wielding Suspect; Man was Behaving Erratically, Attempting Carjacks, Police Say

A 42-year-old Peoria police officer with two years on the job shot at a berserk man who pointed a rifle at him last night, cops say. All police will say about the suspect so far is that he's a 23-year-old Peoria resident. Calls began coming in about him at about 11:45 p.m. in the area of 75th Avenue and Thunderbird. He was threatening suicide, pointing a rifle at people, trying to carjack motorists and start fights, police say. Then Officer Dave Perron (pictured) drove up for the

  • Death Valley: Peoria Woman Accused of Killing 3-year-old Girl; Tattooed Man Booked on Suspicion of Murder and Kidnapping

We're still waiting for info from the Peoria Police Department on this one, but the Arizona Republic has a story on it already: A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for killing her boyfriend's 3-year-old niece. This is yet another truly heinous case of child abuse, whoever did it: The girl's lifeless body was found back in April with chunks of hair missing, cuts, and possibly a burn, as well as severe bruising. Doctors believe the girl would have survived the blunt-force i

In what will probably be described sarcastically as a "dream come true," by fathers of 10-year-old girls across the Valley, the Jonas Brothers are scheduled to play in a public kickball game in Peoria in August. The pop-tarts -- who vehemently campaign for chastity, clean living, and just about everything else the rest of us mortals do to have fun -- have agreed to play a game of kickball at the Peoria Sports Complex on August 11th against 104.7 KISS deejays Jo
