Funky Asian-fusion restaurant Belly is closing in Phoenix. What to know

Belly Kitchen & Bar, the Valley’s funky Southeast Asian fusion restaurant, will close its original location on Camelback Road and Seventh Avenue later this month.

The team announced the upcoming closure on social media on Wednesday, explaining that the restaurant’s last day of service will be Oct. 30.

“With a heavy heart, we have to let you all know that we have made the difficult decision to close Belly in Phoenix,” the post says. “Despite our best efforts to sustain, it no longer makes sense to carry on.”

Other local restaurants were quick to respond to the news. Progress posted, “We love you, neighbor,” and The Coronado simply shared “Heartbreaking.”

Belly opened its unique two-story space in late 2020, starting first with takeout. As pandemic restrictions lifted, the small restaurant invited customers inside its two dining areas and onto its second-floor patio.

Much of the restaurant’s menu was inspired by Vietnamese cuisine with influences from Japan and Thailand. It included dishes that paired perfectly with creative craft cocktails.

It was the first restaurant from Instrumental Hospitality Group, which was founded by chef Michael Babcock and Wayne Coats formerly of Welcome Diner, plus industry pros Robert Cissel and Paul Waxman.

However, the restaurant’s ownership group has evolved over the years. Coats left in July 2021 and culinary director Babcock announced his departure in July 2023.

In September 2022, a second location of Belly launched in Gilbert’s Epicenter development. That location currently remains open.
