The chef and owner of one of the Valley’s most popular brunch spots will debut a new restaurant later this month.
Diners flock to Dana Dumas’ SugarJam The Southern Kitchen for decadent French toast, savory chicken and waffles, and seasonal holiday pies. Now the chef hopes to gain the same following with her latest concept, Soul Fire Tacos.
The taco shop will open Feb. 21 in Scottsdale, just a few doors down from SugarJam, on Hayden Road near 82nd Street.
Soul Fire Tacos fuses Dumas’ signature southern cuisine with Latin-inspired dishes. The menu features beer-battered catfish tacos, short rib birria tacos and tequila lime wings. Dumas described opening this new restaurant as “an honor.”
“Black and Brown cultures have always had synergy,” Dumas said in a news release. “From our family traditions to our music and our cuisines, bringing the two together was a no-brainer. In a world where we are more divided than ever, I want to show the fire that happens when we come together.”

What to expect at Soul Fire Tacos
To lead the kitchen, Dumas has tapped Johnnie Dixon, a chef who played wide receiver at Ohio State (and got a cup of coffee in the NFL). Soul Fire’s menu also includes burritos, salads and bowls, along with rotating daily specials. A signature dish, per the release, is the Soul Roll, which combines fried mac and cheese, candied yams and greens.
“When Dana asked me to be a part of Soul Fire Tacos, I couldn’t resist,” Dixon said in the release. “I hope to bring many smiles to the Arizona community.”
Soul Fire Tacos seats 24 diners in its 900-square-foot space. On the taco shop’s opening day, customers who purchase a taco, burrito or bowl will receive a free chicken or carnitas taco.
