The world lost a great filmmaker over the weekend when Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were killed in their home.

As eulogies poured in from around the globe, local movie theater chain Harkins Theatres planned its own tribute.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, select Harkins locations will show Reiner’s 1996 film “The American President.”

Tickets are $5 each, and proceeds benefit the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBTQ+ equality, and a group that Reiner worked with and supported during his lifetime.

Editor's Picks

Directed by Reiner and written by Aaron Sorkin, “The American President” stars Michael Douglas as a widowed U.S. president who falls in love with an environmental lobbyist, played by Annette Bening. He is forced to choose between his political career and his new relationship as his approval ratings decline due to political attacks. The film also stars Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox and Richard Dreyfuss.

“The American President” is just one of many modern classics that Reiner directed during his career. The actor and filmmaker is also responsible for rock ‘n’ roll mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” (1984), “Stand By Me” (1986), “The Princess Bride” (1987), “When Harry Met Sally” (1989), “Misery” (1990) and “A Few Good Men” (1992)
