On one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, local law enforcement and DUI checkpoints will heavily patrol Valley streets.

To avoid a DUI and keep you and others safe this holiday, you may want to consider leaving the car at home when you head out to celebrate.

Molson Coors is once again trying to make it easier to stay safe. Its Coors Light Free Rides program makes all Valley Metro public transportation free starting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, including the light rail, buses and ADA Dial-a-Ride service.

“At Molson Coors, our brands have always been part of the special moments that bring people together, and the Free Rides program reflects our commitment to celebrating responsibly,” said Alison Hanrahan, community affairs manager for Molson Coors, in the announcement. “Valley Metro is an integral part of how Phoenix stays connected, and we’re proud to partner with them once again to help people get home safely this New Year’s Eve.”

On New Year’s Eve, the light rail will run until 2 a.m. Despite the deadly accident involving a light rail train and a pickup truck this week, the track in that part of the rail line is back open and ready to transport passengers.

Molson Coors runs the program in a number of other U.S. cities as well. Phoenix is one of seven cities that are participating in the program this year. The others are Charlotte, N.C., Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Milwaukee and Washington, D.C.

This is the 11th year that Phoenix has participated in the Coors Light Free Rides program. Last year, the New Year’s Eve Free Rides program saw its highest ridership yet; 440,000 people around the country took advantage of complimentary transit when celebrating the new year. Last year, Coors Light’s New Year’s Eve Free Rides provided 19,000 fare-free rides in the Phoenix area.
