But on Friday, June 20, the downtown Phoenix attraction will offer some education about the human body that's strictly for the grownups.
“Nerdy & Naughty: A Night of Sexy Science," an evening designed to titillate and educate, is the latest installment in the center's Science With a Twist series, which features after-hours experiences intended for guests ages 21 and over to explore the Science Center in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, complete with adult beverages and hands-on activities.
"'Nerdy & Naughty: A Night of Sexy Science' was born out of our desire to make science engaging, unexpected, and fun for adults. We wanted to create an experience that pushes boundaries in a tasteful, educational way — something that sparks curiosity and conversation," says Chief of Science & Curiosity Sari Custer.
Some of the evening's activities include:
- Race the Rubber: Strap on a helmet, start moving and watch as each step inflates a condom balloon on top of your head. First to burst their balloon wins.
- Period Cramp Simulator: See how the uterus-having crowd lives by strapping on a device that delivers real contractions to put your pain tolerance to the test.
- The Science (and Engineering) of Sex Toys: Get hands-on with the engineering behind sex toys — design, mechanics and innovation that make them work.
There will also be sex-themed trivia and a guest speaker, who will talk about moving from performance-based sex toward pleasure-based sex. Representatives from the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual & Domestic Violence and Be Well Intimacy and Sexuality Counseling will be on hand to talk about community resources and answer questions.
Though the event is open to anyone 21 and over, Custer says the nature of the event may not be suitable for everyone.
"The content is best suited for those comfortable engaging with topics related to sex, intimacy and human relationships in a scientific and mature context. It’s a lighthearted and educational evening aimed at promoting open dialogue and curiosity," she says.
“Nerdy & Naughty: A Night of Sexy Science": 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 20. Arizona Science Center, 600 E. Washington St. Cost is $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers in advance and $35 for nonmembers at the door.
