When a new spot opens in town, we’re eager to check it out, let you know our initial impressions, share photos and dish about menu items. First Taste, as the name implies, is not a full-blown review but instead a peek inside restaurants that have just opened – an occasion to sample a few items and satisfy curiosities (both yours and ours).
The shopping center on the southeast corner of Camelback Road and 32nd Street has a new tenant. Right next to the disassembled home of the closed Tomaso’s on Camelback, a new ice cream shop is scooping dessert.
Negranti Creamery launched in 2010 and specializes in sheep’s milk ice cream. The company has locations across California and Idaho, and opened its first Arizona location on May 29.
The new Camelback Road shop is large, featuring a long ice cream freezer, coffee counter and pastry case plus two seating areas, one with bistro tables and the other with brown leather couches and armchairs.
The menu includes staple and seasonal flavors. Three are made with typical cow’s milk and there are a few dairy-free vegan options, but the remaining selection uses sheep’s milk. The most popular flavor is the Salted Brown Sugar, a friendly server informed us on a recent visit.

Along with that salty-sweet scoop, we tried a subtle peaches and cream flavor and a bright orange Thai tea scoop.
The company touts the benefits of sheep’s milk, which some may find easier to digest than cow’s milk. To eat, the sheep’s milk ice cream differs in texture from its cow’s milk counterpart. It’s much less creamy, more like a sorbet. Where typical ice cream is often served with a glass of water, this light dessert is refreshing on its own.
Fans of thick, creamy ice cream may miss the richness of the classic frozen dessert. But when it’s 110 degrees outside, this light, refreshing version may be just what we need.
At Negranti, the ice creams are served in scoops or in milkshakes, floats and affogatos. Any flavor can be mixed with espresso or blended into a less-heavy shake. Ice cream sandwiches and nachos, served with waffle cone chips, are also available.
The cafe also offers a menu of coffee drinks, pastries including brownies and muffins, and canned and bottled cold drinks. Ice cream pints are available to go. Here’s a peek inside the new dessert shop.

Negranti has locations in California and Idaho. The new Phoenix shop is the company’s first in Arizona.
