After 13 years of serving inventive burgers, fries and shakes in north Phoenix, Paradise Valley Burger Co. has a new home.

The fast-casual restaurant was originally located on 40th Street and Bell Road. It will reopen in a north Scottsdale shopping center off Hayden Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard this week. Chef and owner Bret Shapiro plans to make the transition as seamless as possible. He will turn off the flat top and fryers at the Phoenix eatery after service on Thursday and will open in Scottsdale beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday.

“I tried my best to stay as close to that location as possible,” he says.

Shapiro opted to make the move to a space that has more room for cooking and storage, which will allow the restaurant to add chicken sandwiches and onion rings to the menu. The Scottsdale restaurant will also serve beer and wine. But, the owner emphasized that the staff and menu offerings that people grew to love in Phoenix will be the same.

"We still want to be that intimate hamburger place," he says.

At the new spot, guests will be able to watch the team work with the flat-top, fryers and a milkshake-making station all just behind the counter.

“We’re cooking everything up front, so we’re excited about that,” Shapiro says.

Paradise Valley Burger Co. is known for its Brulee Burger, which is topped with a burnt sugar bun. The eatery has garnered fame beyond the Valley thanks to features on shows including the Travel Channel’s “Man v. Food” and Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

Memorabilia from those visits hangs above the windows at the Scottsdale restaurant. Toward the back of the 35-seat dining space is another wall of local and national clippings and awards.

“We know we had a really good run at the other spot because we have too many plaques on the wall,” Shapiro says. “We ran out of space.”

In addition to its regular menu, the restaurant will continue its bimonthly rotation of specials as well as unique menus for holidays, ranging from a cheeky 4/20 menu to the upcoming Halloween menu that will include a pumpkin creme brulee milkshake and a Frankenstein Burger.

“It’s always changing because our menu is always changing,” he says of the burger they come up with each year. “We Frankenstein one ingredient from every burger on the menu. It’s honestly a really great way to taste the whole menu in one burger.”

Paradise Valley Burger Co. joins Sonora Village, which also includes Thai House, Veggie Village and the recently renovated O.H.S.O. Distillery.

The word about the restaurant is already out. White poster boards are plastered across the restaurant’s windows with its opening date and the proclamation, “Burger time baby!” But on our recent behind-the-scenes visit, several would-be guests popped their heads inside in hopes of getting a sneak peek.

Shapiro’s Paradise Valley Pizza Co., which is located next to the original location, will remain on Bell. In 2023, Shapiro opened a second location of the burger joint in Tempe. Once he gets the Scottsdale restaurant up and running, he says he aims to continue adding outposts that will allow his kitchen and crew opportunities to grow.

“I really want to get this one purring and perfect, he says, "but after that, that definitely is the plan."
