Summer is really tough for restaurants in Phoenix, and this June, the Valley saw many spots close their doors.
Tempe's Mill Avenue district has seen a lot of turnover lately, and this month, two pizzerias joined the list of shuttered eateries. Around the Valley, some longstanding chains closed their remaining Arizona locations and smaller eateries served their final meals. One acclaimed fine dining spot shut down and multiple local bars announced last call for the last time.
Here are the Phoenix restaurants and bars that have recently closed.
Azlin at the Clarendon
Azlin served an eclectic menu at the Clarendon Hotel and Spa in midtown Phoenix. The restaurant, which opened in March 2024, showcased the creative cooking of chef Pierce Azlin. Following his namesake restaurant's closure, the chef has joined the team at Roosevelt Row restaurant Industry Standard.
Chart House
Chart House, a luxury steakhouse chain that started in Aspen, Colorado in the '60s, has closed its last remaining Arizona location. The Scottsdale restaurant served customers for 35 years before it was sold to Prime Steakhouse Concepts earlier this year. The group also runs Steak 44 and 48, Ocean 44 and 48, and Dominick's Steakhouse, as well as Durant's, an iconic midtown spot that the company recently acquired and plans to rejuvenate.
Claypot Kitchen
Mesa eatery Claypot Kitchen was known for its claypot rice, congee and noodles. The small restaurant closed in mid-May, announcing the final day on social media. "We are endlessly grateful to each of you who walked through our doors, shared meals with loved ones, celebrated milestones, and made us a part of your story," the owners wrote, thanking their customers for years of support.
Eat the Rich
Eat the Rich, the latest concept to occupy the space on the northeast corner of Roosevelt and Fifth streets in downtown Phoenix, has closed. The casual bar and hot dog spot was owned by the team behind Killer Whale Sex Club, Pretty Penny and F.Y.P.M. New owners have taken over the space, and it is set to reopen later this summer as the second location of a West Valley wine bar.
Famous 48
Located at The Shops at Gainey Village, Famous 48 has closed. The tavern served classic bar staples with a Southwest spin along with beer, wine and craft cocktails. Famous 48 was part of Square One Concepts, the company behind Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers, Bourbon & Bones, Nook Kitchen and other local spots.
Flancer's Incredible Sandwiches and Pizzeria
The Mesa location of Flancer's Incredible Sandwiches and Pizzeria closed in late June. The restaurant served customers for 17 years. Fans of the sandwiches, burgers and slices can find their favorite Flancer's bites at the original Gilbert location, which remains open.
Island Fin Poke Co.
Florida-based chain Island Fin Poke Co. has closed its only Arizona location. The restaurant served poke bowls and Dole whip at the Verde at Cooley Station plaza in Gilbert since July 2023.
Joe's Crab Shack
Arizona's last location of the chain Joe's Crab Shack has served its final seafood buckets. The restaurant, located near Arizona Mills mall, served customers in its kitschy seaside-themed dining room for over two decades.
The Larder & The Delta
Acclaimed fine-dining destination The Larder & The Delta closed after less than a year in its new home. Chef Stephen Jones in September moved his concept from downtown Phoenix to the former Binkley's Restaurant, switching the focus to multi-course tasting menus. The new concept later added a bar menu and then promised an a la carte dining room menu, which never came to fruition.
Legends Never Die
Tucked into a small, windowless space connected to Eat The Rich was Legends Never Die. The speakeasy-style hidden bar served creative cocktails that employed scientific techniques and twists. It has now closed, and is slated to become a champagne lounge for a new wine bar moving in soon.
Mellow Mushroom
Tempe's location of the Atlanta-based chain Mellow Mushroom has closed. The pizzeria served slices and pies on the southwest corner of Mill Avenue and Seventh Street.
The Rec Pizza & Detroit Eats
The Rec Pizza, a West Valley spot for Detroit-style pie, has closed. The restaurant's landlord didn't renew their lease, per a statement from the eatery. The restaurant was located on Lake Pleasant Road in Peoria.
RnR
Two-story sports bar RnR has closed. The Old Town spot served customers inside and on its huge double-decker patio filled with TVs and misters. It's part of Evening Entertainment Group, which also owns Bottled Blonde, Backyard and other Valley restaurants and bars.
Spinelli's Pizza
Spinelli's Pizza, a Mill Avenue spot that served Philadelphia-style pie and sandwiches, has closed. It served the Tempe community from its colorful shop on Fifth Street since 2014.
STK
Flashy Scottsdale restaurant STK officially closed in June following a months-long temporary closure. The two-story restaurant was located on the Scottsdale Waterfront in the heart of Old Town. It's part of a national chain with steakhouses around the country.
