This Valley staple was named Arizona's best seafood spot

The middle of the desert and seafood don't always go hand in hand. But the owners of one local restaurant mini-chain set out to change that. Now, they've been recognized as the best seafood in Arizona.

Review site Yelp just released its 2025 list of the best seafood in every state. For Arizona, Valley staple Chula Seafood rose to the top.

Chula has three locations around the Valley, located at Uptown Plaza on Central Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix, on Roosevelt Street in south Scottsdale and on Hayden Road in north Scottsdale.

Fresh shrimp, scallops and fish steaks are available at Chula Seafood.

Tirion Boan

The company's seafood success stems from its boat, aptly named The Chula, which resides in Point Loma, California. Father and son team Jim and Jon Heflin run the operation, with Jim helming the boat in California and Jon serving fresh fish in Phoenix along with his wife Mandy and business partner Hogan Jamison.

"It doesn’t get fresher than the boat-to-table catches served at this Scottsdale counter-style restaurant and seafood market," the Yelp list explained.

The list also noted the shrimp, fresh poke, creamy clam chowder and seafood sandwiches, including the standout green chile tuna melt.

Chula's three shops also feature well-stocked seafood counters for those who prefer to cook at home. For events, Chula sells party platters and throughout the week, there are rotating daily specials worth catching such as Tuesday shrimp tacos and occasional specialty poke bowls, albacore katsu and lobster rolls.
