At Frank's New York Style Deli in Phoenix, the answer is both.
Tasting Table just released a list of the most iconic sandwich shops in every state. For Arizona, Frank's represents.
"A no-frills Phoenix-based deli, Frank's New York Style Deli is loved for its New York style classic sandwiches. The tiny sandwich shop tucked into the corner of a convenience store has been around for over 40 years and features American classics like pastrami on rye, corned beef sandwiches, Reuben sandwiches, and bagels with lox and cream cheese," the list says. "The shop's most popular sandwich on the menu is the Tony — a classic sub overstuffed with all the best quality Italian meats."
And this isn't the first time this little corner market has earned some top praise. In September 2024, Yelp named Frank's the home of the best sandwiches in Arizona.

Both Yelp and Tasting Table named Frank's Deli the best spot to get a sandwich in Phoenix.

The deli's longevity has also helped establish it as a staple in the community. The family-run business has been serving sandwiches since 1982.
So, are the sandwiches any good? After Yelp's mention last fall, we had to find out for ourselves.
The sandwich menu includes classic B.L.T., pastrami, corned beef and tuna options. Both lists called out The Tony, a sub piled high with pepperoni, hot capicola and genoa salami, plus mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, Italian dressing and provolone cheese.
The enormous sandwich could easily feed two. The bread is tender but sturdy enough to hold the stack of fillings and the salty meats combine with fresh veggies, creamy mayo and provolone to create a classic, well-balanced bite.
For those looking for a hot option, our go-to order at Frank's is the meatball sub. In this shareable sandwich, large meatballs are cut in two so they lay flat inside the toasted bun. Rich, herb-filled tomato sauce fills every nook and melty cheese ties it all together. It's a messy, delicious mountain of food.
So we're happy to report the sandwiches are, indeed, delicious. Best in all of Arizona? That's hard to say. But an excellent spot for a quick, casual lunch nonetheless.
