You've probably driven by New Hong Kong Restaurant at least a dozen times, but don't feel bad about never having ventured in. The restaurant, with it's once-glamorous exterior, now looks like a places that's trapped in a former age. To be sure, it's not the kind of place that -- at least from the outside -- looks like a culinary destination.
But it is. Once you get over the faded carper and florescent lights, you'll start to appreciate that this place serves excellent Cantonese cuisine. We go often to get our Chinese fix, ordering everything from bubbling hot pots to steaming plates of noodles.
No matter what entrees we're feeling that day, we always start with meal with an order of West Lake soup. It's not the most attractive dish but once you dig into a cup of the thick, mild broth, you'll understand the appeal. The soup is loaded with chunks of beef, silky tofu, and pieces of bright cilantro. Your server will always provide a shaker full of white pepper, to add a nice aroma and heat to the soup.
