The Whisperlights @ The Duce

It's almost hard to characterize The Whisperlights as a local band, with members of the eight-piece group living in Phoenix and on both coasts. The band makes it work, utilizing a smaller lineup for Valley gigs while touring with the full band. A true product of the digital age, The Whisperlights' songs are written through long e-mail exchanges, a process sure to come in handy as the summer ends and some members jet off to Bangladesh and Palestine. Don't call it a hiatus — The Whisperlights don't plan on calling it quits. "We have an affinity for the city even if we're not going to live here anymore. It's where we found each other. It's where we formed. It all makes sense," says drummer Wasef El-Kharouf. The band will kick off its summer tour with a CD-release party for its new record, Surfaces, an upbeat, guitar-driven effort that demonstrates the band's world-minded scope. Some of the songs aren't even in English. The band will share the boxing ring-turned-stage at The Duce with Underground Cities, There Is Danger, and Dry River Yacht Club, all bands that share members with The Whisperlights.
