Cinco de Mayo is upon us — and that means blanket DUI enforcement is upon us, too.

We have the 411 to prevent you needing 911 on one of the heaviest days on the calendar for drinking and driving.

With May 5 falling on a Saturday this year, some motorist-partiers may need extra help avoiding trouble.

Some of the worst drivers will face a new and powerful weapon against impairment-related collisions. Governor Doug Ducey in March signed a law that makes it a felony to drive the wrong way on a freeway while impaired.

In addition, the state is experimenting with a wrong-way detection system on Interstate 17 between the Stack interchange with Interstate 10 and the Loop 101. It’s already been credited with catching at least a dozen wrong-way drivers.

Most wrong-way drivers are under the influence, statistics show, with many scoring significantly over the limit.

So, if you plan to go out and get behind the wheel, see below for all of the places Valleywide where authorities will be waiting, according to information released by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

But before you get to that, consider not driving at all.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery announced this week that he's continuing the "Save Lives, Don't DUI" campaign that offers a discount for Lyft ride-sharing service during the weekend.

Between now and May 5, first-time users who download the Lyft app can received $5 off their first four rides by entering the promo code "CINCOPHX," the office said in a news release. Veteran Lyft users can punch in the code "CINCOPHX18" for 20 percent off two rides.

“This campaign is a reminder to plan ahead for a ride home, and eliminates one more excuse anyone has for not choosing a sober driver option,” Montgomery said.

If you choose poorly, besides possibly hurting someone, you could end up meeting some of the prosecuting attorneys on Montgomery's Vehicular Crimes Bureau and getting fitted for an orange suit.
