If June in the Valley doesn't feel like optimum walking weather to you, you're either (a) perfectly sane or (b) simply hanging out with the wrong people. For the sake of argument, let's say it's the latter -- and rejoice in the fact that if your urge to roam can't be tempered by the summer sun, you are anything but alone. Heed the call of the outdoors at the first in a series of Summer "Survivor" Fun Walks, 7 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Phoenix Zoo, 455 North Galvin Parkway. Stroll through the zoo's many exhibits, receive walking tips from expert Jo Ann Taylor, and engage in other on-site activities including demonstrations, presentations, yoga and massages. Best of all, enjoy the company of other like-minded souls for whom summer isn't an indoor proposition.

Admission is $9 for adults and $5 for children. For reservations call 602-914-4333. - Craig Wallach

In a twist, competitors ride mountain bikes to negotiate the terrain of Papago Park. Later in the morning, swimmers paddle it out in 825- and 1,600-meter races.

Registration continues until the day of the event. Entry fees range from $38 to $100. Participants meet at 5:30 a.m. at Tempe Town Lake, Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway. Call 480-460-5052 or see www.dbcadventures.com. - Eric Schandel

Back in the day, your game was about catching big air -- these days, it's about catching your breath. Claim one last moment in the sun at the Phoenix Mercury's "Has Beens" Basketball Camp, 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. Former Mercury superstar Michele Timms (pictured), whose jersey was retired last August, holds court with players ages 18 and up in the gym at Phoenix Preparatory Academy, 735 East Fillmore. Appearances by Mercury players and staff also figure into the game plan; a second session follows on July 8.

Registration fee, including a camp tee shirt, WNBA rubber basketball and two tickets to a Mercury home game: $50. One last chance to cling to the past: priceless. To register, call 602-514-8333 or visit www. phoenixmercury.com. -Jill Koch
