Freedom Day, more commonly known as Juneteenth, was first celebrated on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, by 250,000 African-Americans upon hearing news from Union troops about the Emancipation Proclamation, the act that granted Black people freedom from enslavement. Since 2021, Juneteenth has been recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S. and serves as a way to celebrate Black cultures and communities across the country.
