Arizona’s Curaleaf dispensaries are having some fun with November’s hotly contested presidential election around the corner. To get in on the action, the company renamed three strains of flower.
Arizona weed consumers can now find Kamala Kush, Donald OG and Space Jill — a reference to Green Party candidate Jill Stein — at local Curaleaf locations, but supplies are limited.
The strains aren’t new, Curaleaf budtender Brad Lewis told Phoenix New Times. Instead, they are old house brand strains renamed to “be cute.” Curaleaf said the campaign, which is called “Toke the Vote,” will run through Election Day or as long as supply lasts.
The Donald OG strain was formerly and aptly known as “Florida Oranges.” The hybrid flower probably won’t have you ranting about how “THEY’RE EATING THE DOGS” or spewing election conspiracy theories. Instead, its nearly 30% THC content is supposed to give you happy, calming and relaxing feelings.
The strain renamed after Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t have as fitting an antecedent. Kamala Kush was previously known as “Sweet Cheese.” And while this strain may have you recreating Harris’ signature cheesy laugh, we’d recommend against angling for your boss’ job while under its influence.
With a slightly lower THC content, Kamala Kush won’t get you as high as Donald OG.
Space Jill, named for Stein, is a hybrid strain previously called “Zpumoni Moon Belts.” It’s also a missed opportunity — “Space Kelly," a nod to former astronaut and current Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, was right there for the taking. Space Jill has a lower THC content than both Donald OG and Kamala Kush.
If Curaleaf needs other political strain names, Phoenix Redditors had plenty of suggestions, including Sleepy Joe Sour Diesel, Kari Lake Express, RFK Jr Brain Worm Wowie and Make It Go Away Again Kush.
For Arizona smokers looking to get a taste of Curaleaf’s political strain offerings, time is of the essence. The product is available at all 16 of Curaleaf’s Arizona locations. However, its Central Phoenix location only received 50 of the renamed strains and Lewis said supply is already low.
