One new idea for every day in 2011. We're talking big, small, local, international, in action and on the drawing board. Here's today's -- what's yours?

When Emily Fischer's mother started losing her eyesight, she decided to start mapping ... on quilts.

The Brooklyn-based architect and designer calls her project, Soft-Maps, an "experiment in tactile wayfinding," but more than practical navigation, her quilts are a physical love letter to each city and neighborhood she makes.

Fischer writes that her creations are, simply, reminders of home: "In a world that is increasingly digitized and remote, a quilted Soft-Map provides an expressive way to reconnect with your surroundings."

See more of her creations at Haptic Lab.
