Just in time for a big New Year's Eve party with a live musical performance by Obadiah Parker, new Peoria restaurant Blu Agave Arizona Kitchen is set to open its doors tomorrow.
The brainchild of chef-owner Charles Schwerd -- who also owns Arrowhead Grill in Glendale and honed his reputation as co-founder of four Mastro's restaurants -- it's a welcome new indie dining option for the West Valley scene.
Schwerd's concept spins Arizona inspirations in a comforting way, starting with hot, homemade tortillas with agave butter, spicy pork posole, and gazpacho-style shrimp cocktail.
Burgers, tortas, street-style tacos, and wood-fire rotisserie chicken are also featured on the lunch and dinner menu, as well as entrees with Southwestern flair, from sarsaparilla-braised beef short rib with queso fresco mashed potatoes and carmelized onions, to red chile-grilled black cod with Cabo San Lucas rice and asparagus slaw. For kids, there's a create-your-own plate option served with Jarritos Mexican soda and homemade "lil' churros" for dessert. (Don't worry, grown-ups -- the churros are on the regular dessert menu, too.)
