Chula Seafood has three locations around the Valley, with two in Scottsdale and one in uptown Phoenix. The specialty shops pride themselves on serving super fresh fish, much of which comes from their own boat. Also named the Chula, it fishes off the coast of California and docks in Point Loma.
The multi-state operation is a family affair. Jim Heflin runs the fishing side. His son Jon Heflin, Jon's wife Mandy and their business partner Hogan Jamison serve fresh fish in Phoenix.
The sustainably sourced seafood is brought directly to the Valley and is either sold raw for customers to cook at home, or crafted into Chula's delectable sandwiches, bowls and entrees.
Chula has been a destination for seafood in our desert city since the first location made its debut. That's thanks to a large, skillfully crafted menu that has something for everyone.
What to order at Chula Seafood
For a cold, refreshing bite, pick between the Hawaiian and Korean poke bowls, which include the customer's choice of salmon, tuna, spicy tuna or scallops. For something a little heartier, opt for the classic fish and chips or decadent lobster mac and cheese. Throughout the week, there are daily specials and the menus vary slightly by location, so make sure to check online.Whenever we stop by this seafood staple, our go-to order is the Green Chile Tuna Melt. This nostalgic diner dish, typically made with canned tuna and melted American cheese, is leveled up every step of the way at Chula.
Crusty, grilled Noble Bread is piled with large chunks of confit albacore tuna and topped with melted Oaxaca cheese. A detail you won't find on most diner versions, is the addition of green chiles. More flavorful than spicy, the chiles add smokiness and depth.
The sandwich is wonderful as-is, but a little side of chimichurri really sets it over the edge. The herbacious condiment adds a hint of brightness that lifts the rich sandwich, solidifying this seafood staple as an essential Phoenix dish.
