Among our New Year's food resolutions (yours, too, most likely): Cook more. And eat more healthfully.

Trader Joe's keeps both promises with a fresh, pre-packaged, pre-washed and cut mix of several Southern greens -- mustard, turnip, collard, and spinach -- all for $2.49.

Greens get points from nutritionists as a "superfood" for their antioxidant properties, and for being high in minerals like calcium and magnesium.

The Trader Joe's bag has recipes on the back, or you can check out Greens, Glorious Greens!, full of fool-proof recipes using a variety of greens both cooked and raw.


Here's a recipe for vegetarian stewed greens, right off the back of the Southern Greens bag,  that would be great alongside cornbread -- available pre-made or in a mix at TJ's, as well.

Simple Greens

1 lb. Trader Joe's Southern Greens blend

1 clove garlic minced

1 onion , chopped

½ c. chopped green onion

1 c. vegetable broth

1 c. tomato juice

Salt, pepper, marjoram to taste

Parmesan cheese

Sauté garlic and onion in a pot large enough to hold greens. Add vegetable broth and tomato juice and bring to a boil. Add greens and seasonings and cook over low heat for 35 min. or until tender. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
