24: Parrillada from Asadero Norte de Sonora

Keep seeing the same dish ordered up at any restaurant and you know the regulars are onto something. So goes it for the parrillada (grilled platter) at Asadero Norte De Sonora, the tiny, authentic Mexican eatery on 16th Street and Adams in Phoenix.

This no-frills grill dish, available in full and half (media) orders, is tailor-made for meat-lovers in the mood to share. We went with the half, which included three meat selections from a list of six: costilla (rib), lengua (tongue), pastor (pork), asada (grilled steak), barbacoa (barbecue), and cabeza (beef head.)

If the visual of the raised platter covered in aluminum foil and piled high with meat and grilled vegetables doesn't grab you, the aromas will. Get ready to eat.

Our meat selections included lengua (tongue), pastor (pork), and cabeza (beef head) served with fresh tortillas, veggies like onions and cucumbers, and salsa (we opted for guacamole.)

During the sheer joy we experienced in making our own tasty, tortilla-filled creations or, hell, just eating the tender meat right off the platter, the realization that we only paid $12.50 for this bounty of food meant to be shared and still threatening leftovers, extended our already-there grins and had us feeling like a in-the-know-regulars in no time.
