13: Peter Shikany
Peter Shikany was born in Minneapolis and grew up in central Phoenix. In the 1960s and 70s he learned to draw, surf (the other kind), and kern type, among other things. In 1989, the loss of a job at an ad agency along with his love of design led to the formation of P.S. Studios where he has been president and creative director for the last 21 years.
"We work in a great mid-century modern building designed by Al Beadle, where I am fortunate to have the most loyal, hard-working, talented team to work with," Shikany says. "Which, by the way, is the real key to success. We work hard. We stay true to our values and vision and that way we avoid becoming B.S. Studios."

1. List five things on your inspiration wall:
(Can I have more than five?)
- illy espresso
- The paintings of Walton Ford
- North Shore of Oahu
- Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto
- Tin toys from the 40s and 50s
- Art from Lisa Sette Gallery
- The architecture of Tadeo Ando
2. What was your last big project?
I think in the last couple years we have all found out that every project is a big project.
A few that we've been working on:
We just completed the materials for the Fall Season at Desert Botanical Garden. We are developing all the marketing materials for MIM (Musical Instrument Museum). These are two of the most amazing cultural institutions in the Valley. We are very fortunate to have them here.
We also just finished the illy café holiday catalog and an exhibition catalog for the Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C.
3. What's your next big project?
I can't wait to find out.
4. Why do you do what you do?
Three good reasons to own your own design firm.
1. This is exactly what I was meant to do.
2. I live for design, art, music, and architecture
3. I think I am unemployable
5. What's something you want Phoenix to know about you?
That I love the desert. I don't even mind the summers.
What's something you don't want Phoenix to know about you?
That I would live at the beach if I could.
