If Stephanie Carrico isn't running around the Trunk Space -- her gallery and performance arts venue -- she might be under a pile of sock monkeys.
The Utah native moved to Phoenix when she was 9 years old and eventually attended ASU for photography and sculpture. She spent most of her time during college hanging out downtown, which is why she bought a home downtown as soon as she could -- it only made sense to be a fixed part of the scene that she had felt so at home in, she says.
In 2004, Carrico and JRC opened the Trunk Space on Grand Avenue. She and her sock monkeys have been there ever since.

2. What was your last big project? If you don't count Trunk Space I would have to say was my sock monkey photo series. I've worked on it for years, and I still have some things I want to do with it, but it is on hold right now. They are photographs of Isaac The Sock Monkey immersed in the things in life that make the world interesting.
I feel like there are people that are really great characters. Downtown Phoenix is filled with really great characters which is what makes downtown really great. (As a place, I think the Valley kinda blows, but I stay here because of the people.) I've also documented Isaac at roadside oddities (Muffler Men, Log Cabin Motels, celebrity grave-sites), and other unique commercial architectural structures that seems to be dying out quickly in this country. Weird old hotels, neon signs, old roadside diners and such. Things that are quickly being replaced with bland strip malls.
It breaks my heart that these things that add flavor to the landscape are being destroyed so I wanted to document them. Isaac The Sock Monkey is a friend I can take with me anywhere I go at anytime so he appears in photographs visiting these roadside attractions as a commentator and expert.
3. What's your next big project? The photographic series I'm working on now is documenting the quickly changing face of my adopted home town, but doing so at night. In the years I have been living in Phoenix it has changed so much almost to the point of being unrecognizable from 10 years ago, but with all the changes Phoenix is still pretty much a ghost town at night.
There is this quiet feeling you get in downtown Phoenix at night that I have never experienced in any other city. I am trying to capture that feeling along with showing how if you blink you will miss it.
4. What's something you want Phoenix to know about you? I love to travel, ride bikes, hike and camp. I am always looking for buddies for these such activities.
5. What's something you don't want Phoenix to know about you? I have a horrible sense of direction. If you spun me around in a closet i could get lost.
