This extremely informative video from Buzzfeed is as helpful for veteran Halloween candy traders as it is for people just entering the competitive marketplace. While it's sad that they haven't offered a PDF version of their infographics we think it's fair to say that this was done to encourage people to remain as flexible as possible during this potentially stressful season.

Some important highlights from the video:

  • Be aware of your responsibility and limitations under "Becky's Law."
  • Recent changes to Halloween candy law codify the long held "30 second trade back rule" but only for children between the ages of 5-7 and the elderly.
  • Also ensure that you have set aside a sufficient amount of appropriate candy to satisfy your "Mom & Dad" tax requirements.

We find one major flaw with these guidelines in that the fail to provide any information regarding so called "Asian Candies" like the now familiar Pocky. These candies are readily available in any of the Asian markets around the Valley and they really should receive more Halloween recognition and find their way into more trick-or-treat buckets/bags/pillow cases.

To remedy this oversight we've provided a brief overview of some popular Asian candies.

Pocky: Chocolate covered pretzel sticks. Simple, addicting and immensely snackable. They can also be used like tiny swords to settle tabletop disputes. First Pocky to break loses. Trade Value: High. Don't take anything less than a full-size candy bar for an entire box.

Super Lemon Candy: A piece of hard lemon candy sheathed in a thin layer of pure orifice puckering sourness. Like Warheads that actually taste good. Trade Value: Moderate/High. This is the edible Holy Grail for sour-seekers but they can be hard to come by. Caution: A mouthful of these will give you sours in your mouth, it's not fun.

"Gummies": This is a general class of candy that tends to be significantly softer than regular gummy candies. Their fruit flavors are intense and run the gamut from lychee to muscat, a type of grape. Trade Value: Low/Moderate. If you're lucky you'll get a handful of these and can use them to sweeten other deals with an exotic twist.

If you're lucky enough to score some Asian candy, be aware that visual flavor identification may be next to impossible. While we encourage you to broaden your horizons by diving into unique flavors, please be aware that "unique flavors" can include: Coffee, chalky milk, sour milk, pungent indecipherable "fruit" flavorings, sweet candies filled with extremely salty or savory fillings and so on.
