“Inexpensive?” No. “Budget-friendly?” Also no. “Fiscally responsible?” In this economy?

Yucca Tap Room is cheap, and proud of it.

But there’s a lot more to this legendary Tempe dive bar than just low prices.

Editor's Picks

A Tempe landmark since 1972, Yucca Tap Room is in the heart of Danelle Plaza, serving five decades of regulars who know exactly what they’re getting: a full bar, a full slate of live music, and prices that don’t seem to be trying to keep up with inflation (and don’t make you choose between a student loan payment or a night out).

“A dollar’s tight right now,” says co-owner Sean. “We’re not trying to maximize. We’re not being corporate. We’re just being that neighborhood bar.”

That neighborhood bar is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. — a schedule built more for the third-shift crowd than for the night owls, though you’ll usually find plenty of both here. First responders and military who show a valid ID get their first drink for only $1. “We want to support that unwind for the people who’ve worked that graveyard shift,” Sean explains.

Happy hour runs from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and picks back up after the live music stops, which means the deals follow you around the clock. With 41 drafts on tap (none topping $5 during happy hour), the math is definitely mathing in favor of a tight budget. And a PBR draft is always $2.50, show or no show.

Vinyl Pie, the kitchen operating inside Yucca, turns out freshly made pizzas and wings with house sauces — classic bar fare, and all of it done well. In 2018, Electric Bat Arcade joined the space. Yucca opens the arcade at 6 a.m., along with the bar: The pinball machines and video games don’t care what time it is!

The bar’s roots run deep. Peter Hu purchased what was then Frank’s Yucca Lounge in 1972 and rebranded it as Yucca Tap Room, keeping the live music and the neighborhood vibe. Some of the original interior paneling is still here, too. Hu’s son Rodney remains a co-owner today, alongside Sean and general manager Rhonda Martin.

Over the decades, the stage has hosted some well-known acts, including the Gin Blossoms and Agent Orange during Tempe’s ’90s alternative boom. Phoenix New Times named Yucca the Best Place to See a Punk Show four years in a row, from 2022 through 2025. But Sean emphasizes that the establishment is much more than music.

“Everyone, when they think Yucca, they think of live music,” he says. “Hopefully, they’ll be pleasantly surprised by the rest of what we offer.”

During Arizona Beer Week, the bar runs a full tap takeover — Arizona breweries only, pouring on all 41 lines. That’s just what a good neighborhood bar does, and we hope Yucca keeps doing it for a long, long time.
