From now until we publish the 2016 edition of Best of Phoenix, New Times is naming 100 Tastemakers — members of our local culinary community who help shape the way we eat, drink, and think about food in Phoenix. Some you’ll know, and for others, it’ll be a first introduction, but each person on our list deserves a nod for helping make our city so delicious.     26. Yasu Hashino of Yasu Sushi Bistro
Since opening in 2005, Yasu Sushi Bistro has become a destination for sushi lovers in-the-know, people who don’t let the restaurant’s inconspicuous exterior deter them from venturing inside this North Phoenix restaurant.
Because if you do, you’ll find chef Yasu Hashino serving some of the best Japanese fare in town. Hashino came to the Valley nearly 30 years ago from Japan. Bored with his architecture classes at Arizona State University, he began working in sushi restaurant. He started as a dishwasher at Sushi on Shea and eventually moved into doing kitchen prep before opening his own restaurant at age 35.
Today, he dishes on his favorite place for authentic Italian and the most underrated type of sushi.
My go to place when I want to relax is Sedona. I like the red rocks and being at peace with nature.
The best kept secret in Arizona is Andreoli Italian Grocery in North Scottsdale. I enjoy having real authentic Italian dishes.
The most underrated type of sushi is red snapper from Japan. We prepare the delicate fish with sprinkled pink rock salt, citrus pepper, and fresh-squeezed lemon juice for a savory bite.
My culinary guilty pleasure is…as a chef I expect quality food with every meal, but every now and then I can’t help but to indulge in Coca-Cola gummies.
When I’m not at my restaurant, you can find me…I work six days out of the week, so on my one day off I try to go to the mountains and enjoy the nature.
