Escobar Mexican Kitchen in north-central Phoenix is a family-owned restaurant with a menu based around the homespun recipes of owner Guadalupe Escobar, a native of Mexico City. The menu offers a delicious hodgepodge of regional Mexican specialties, including a dark, rich mole poblano, which is served with a juicy boneless chicken breast. The chile rellenos are very good, oozing with soft, melted squares of panela cheese, and all the tamales are made in-house (try the very good chocolate and pineapple dessert tamale). Some of the best items on the menu are the Mexico City-style sandwiches, including the wet pambazo torta, which bulges with griddled potatoes and chorizo, and is served dripping in a fragrant guajillo salsa.
