Last year we marked the hundred day countdown to Best of Phoenix by sharing some of our favorite food folks' "Personal Best" lists. This year we're bringing back our list of 100 Favorite Dishes. Residents of the Biltmore neighborhood should be very familiar with the name Tarbell. Afterall, Mark Tarbell's namesake restaurant has been a local staple for years. Recently the chef also added a new dining spot to his repertoire, a more casual spot called, The Tavern. Located just next door to Tarbell's this wine-centric restaurant offers an extensive and affordably-priced menu that ranges from gourmet burgers to oysters and caviar.
Our favorite little indulgences off the whole menu are the Spanish-style bikini sandwiches. They take their names from a concert hall in Barcelona where the small bites are said to have been created. The miniature sandwiches are like a Spanish take on a French Croque Monsieur with melted cheese and a variety of top-quality ingredients.
The truffle bikini at The Tavern features a subtle touch of truffle oil with melted Manchego cheese, made from goats milk. The sweet challah bread makes for a perfect base that only becomes better when lightly toasted on the outside. The drizzle of chive oil around the outside of the plate makes for a perfect dipping sauce. Best of all, at just $4, this is perfect small bite to accompany one of The Tavern's inventive wine-based cocktails.
