Mesa Arts Center hosted the 24th stop of
David Byrne's
American Utopia Tour, the artist's first in nearly six years. Drawing from his last tour, with
St. Vincent, none of the performers were tethered to the typical assemblage of amps, pedals, and other associated gear on Thursday, April 19. This allowed for nearly musical-theater levels of choreography and a strict focus on the musicians themselves. Byrne played material from his latest album, along with hits from his previous band Talking Heads, and even covered the Janelle Monáe deep cut "Hell You Talmbout."
Perfume Genius opened the Mesa concert.
