Recalling Russell Pearce

TARGET PEARCE

Consider it a classic pincer move: two separate, ongoing efforts to recall the most powerful, hateful politician in Arizona, state Senate President Russell Pearce.

First into battle was the irrepressible DeeDee Blase, founder of Somos Republicans, an organization loathed by wingnut GOPers and mainstream Democrats with almost equal intensity.

Somos Republicans' stated intent is to increase the Latino Republican voting bloc. In working toward that goal, the group fervently attacks the nativist right, which is now dominant in the party of the pachyderms.

The group supports the DREAM Act and humane immigration reform, has opposed Pearce's breathing-while-brown law, state Senate Bill 1070, and continues to denounce the efforts of wingnut legislators to undermine the birthright citizenship clause of the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment.

Indeed, it was on the day that anti-birthright citizenship legislation was getting introduced by Pearce's lackeys in the state House and state Senate that Blase and a libertarian ally, Halina Reed, filed recall paperwork against Pearce at the Secretary of State's Office.

The official "grounds" for the recall by Blase's new group, Arizonans for Better Government, specifically cites Pearce's "overt disdain" for the U.S. Constitution, and Blase clearly was motivated by Pearce's attack on birthright citizenship.

"This guy is evil," Blase said of Pearce on the day she filed. "I was really bummed out because of the 14th Amendment [bills]. Now I'm so excited."

The recall effort will need to score 7,756 signatures of registered voters from Legislative District 18 by May 27. Once these are obtained and verified as legitimate, Pearce either has to resign or face a recall election on a date set by the Arizona Secretary of State's Office.

Voters of all party affiliations can sign the recall petition, and there's a large pool from which to draw: 68,409 registered LD 18 voters, as of last count, according to the Secretary of State's Office.

This means that forcing a recall election on Pearce is doable. So much so that Assistant Secretary of State Jim Drake told me that his office is preparing for the eventuality that both the Blase-skippered recall and one filed days after hers by another group, Citizens for a Better Arizona, might be successful.

If this occurs, Drake said his office will seek a judicial order combining the two recall elections into one. Pearce could face High Noon at the ballot box as early as November of this year or spring 2012.

It's conceivable that Pearce could lose. In 2008, Pearce bested his Democratic rival for the state Senate by 5,343 votes. In 2010, Pearce exceeded the combined vote totals for both the Libertarian and Democratic candidates by just 4,081.

Even if Pearce ultimately prevails, a recall would damage him politically.

See, Pearce longs to seek higher office, anything from governor or congressman to U.S. senator or — perhaps most powerful — Maricopa County Sheriff, should alterkocker lawman Joe Arpaio ever take a powder, get indicted, or just keel over while in office.

But if Pearce has to campaign to beat back a recall in his own district, it will distract him from exploring other options, robbing him of time, money, and energy in the process. It also will expose an otherwise un-remarked-upon weakness: Many in his own district and party loathe him.

Indeed, I'm convinced that Pearce could never win a statewide election. Congress or sheriff? Maybe. U.S. senator or governor? No way, Jose.

See, Pearce's ham-fisted use of power, his narrow, negative agenda, and his status as an icon of intolerance make him a hero to Tea Baggers, nativists, gun nuts, and the East Valley wackadoodles who dominate the Maricopa County Republican Party.

To a broader audience, Pearce simply looks like what he is: a bigoted, far-right extremist.

Sure, many despise Republican Governor Jan Brewer for her policies or for signing SB 1070 into law. Still, as ditzy as she can be, she doesn't come off as an aggro redneck in need of some serious meds, as the Senate president most certainly does.

Hell, even Sheriff Arpaio seems like a teddy bear compared to the truculent madman from Mesa.

But back to LD 18 and the other prong in the Pearce recall movement, Citizens for a Better Arizona, chaired by registered Republican Chad Snow and organized, in part, by former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Randy Parraz.

CBA has been loosely organizing against Pearce for the past couple of months, mulling the possibility of a recall along the way.

Blase's group got the jump on them, filing recall paperwork first. But on January 31, between 30 and 40 CBA members of various political affiliations met at the Capitol and marched over to the Secretary of State's Office, where Todd Selleck, an LD 18 resident, submitted the recall application.

The grounds for CBA's recall are broader than those given for Blase's Arizonans for Better Government. CBA's statement knocks Pearce for "his failure to focus on issues and concerns that affect all Arizonans," demanding better representation on various issues.

"Mesa and Arizona need a leader who will pass laws to create jobs, protect public education, and ensure access to healthcare for our children and those most in need," CBA's petition statement reads, in part. "By signing this petition, we publicly withdraw our support for Russell Pearce and what he represents."

Dear Governor: Brewer

Give my regards to State Sen. Russel Pearce: A man whom even Houdini envies from the grave. This man of high values, renowned in a circle where only the most prestigious participate, was able to conjure an illusion such as S.B 1070, a law that would not appear to discriminate against any certain group. A feat only Merlin the magician could perform.

I am amazed at this great feat of magic. Do you suppose he would be so kind as to share his secret with the rest of humanity, it might just be the answer to ending racism in our nation, and possibly the entire world.

During world war two, America faced an identical problem with Japanese immigrants, perhaps we should take the same measures in order to protect our border. Advice Sen Russell Pearce on my proposal, I'm sure with all his expertise, he will be able to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

Sincerely Yours:

Illegal is not a race, it is a crime. Come to America legally, or do not come at all. Anchor babies will NEVER be citizens. They are offspring from COWARDS. Come legally, pay taxes and help contribute to America's economy, or do not come here at all. Viva SB1070!

Usgovfail

I will continue to vote for Mr. Pearce as he is crafting bills that protect UNITED STATES CITIZENS, ie: TAXPAYERS. Why can't people just come to America legally? What is so difficult about waiting yoru turn in line? When you go to the grocery store to shop for food, when you go to check out, do you cut in front of everyone and then demand the person you just cut in front of pay your grocery bill? I sure don't but these illegals and their supporters seem to sure feel liek everyone else who has worked for what they want should be required to pay for them. If you want a better life, why not go out and work hard for it? Instead of demanding that it be given to you? Did your parents not teach you any dignity? If they were sneaking through the desert I guess not. My tax money is meant for US CITIZENS, NOT illegals who do not pay income tax and work for cash under tha table. Stupid liberals. Get your hand off my money. America is the land of opportunity, NOT entitlement and guarantees.

Hey fail, I'm glad you brought up the subject of going to the grocery store to shop for food.. While you're politely waiting there in the grocery checkout line and being the model citizen you are (even though you frequently ignore speed limits laws and fervently oppose photo radar systems that might keep your law-breaking proclivity in check), have you ever pondered the extent to which much of the food you're buying was grown and picked or slaughtered by"illegals" doing the kind of work you'd refuse to do for the wages they earn? Instead of berating them for coming here illegally - which is practically the only way many of them could come, given the absurdly low number of slots available for legal foreign workers in the many low-skilled jobs our economy requires - maybe next time you're waiting in the grocery line you could also take a while to consider the necessity for comprehensive immigration reform, for a way of documenting the millions of people who're here in this country working hard and diligently - all of them paying sales and other taxes, and most of them having wages deducted from their paychecks that go into a social security fund from which they'll never receive a dime. Or do you just prefer to keep bitching about "Illegals" and remain blind to who they are and the role they play in your life?

Russell Pearce has dedicated his life to do all he can to eliminate people he doesn't like which is fueled by hate. He is very scandalous. Russell Pearce and and J T Ready are joined at the hip. He should step back and reevaluate his goals in life. In my humble opinion there is no success that can compensate for failure in the home!

Question: If both groups succeed in getting sufficient qualified signatures, could there be two separate elections on different dates? Is it required that recall elections be held on the same date as other scheduled elections, or are they stand alone events?

StephenLemons
StephenLemons

As I understand it, there could be two separate elections, but the Secretary of State's Office informed me that the SOS would likely seek a judicial decision to combine the two, if both efforts are successful.

On your second question, Arizona statute indicates that a recall election would be held on the same date as a regularly scheduled election:

"A.R.S. 19-209, Order for special recall election: If the officer against whom a petition is filed does not resign within five days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and other legal holidays, after the filing as determined pursuant to section 19-208.03, the order calling a special recall election shall be issued within fifteen days and shall be ordered to be held on the next following consolidated election date pursuant to section 16-204 that is ninety days or more after the order calling the election."

Re: Kit and Shaggletooth:

Doesn't anybody realize that Stephen Lemons is a fucking columnist?! That means he writes opinon pieces, dodos. These are not fair and objective articles, nor should they be. They are editorials. Duh!

Cajungman

Kit Carson

No claimed otherwise.

These are NOT however, editorials. They are columns or blogs. The former is the position of a paper, the later the position of an author. DUH.

Even within a column, however, there are professional standards and reader expectations. When the columnist routinely lies, routinely deliberately exaggerates facts, deliberately conflates issues for the purpose of bringing down a political rival -- then good people should speak back to power.

You don't like Pearce. I don't like Pearce. Let's go after him for the things he has done, not the things Lemons has made up about him.

Journalism matters, and Lemons is bad for journalism when he strays from its ethical boundaries.

StephenLemons

Just curious, Kit, what did I "make up" about Pearce? Please enlighten me.

Jack Swift
Jack Swift

Kit Carson, what's your beef anyway? Try to get the point, man. Arpaio is dangerous, sure, or was. But Pearce is the danger now and to come, unless something is done to stop him. You sound like some natavist nitwit driving the Lemons bashing train.

Kit Carson
Kit Carson

My point was rather clear, shame your man-crush on Lemons prevented your from understanding it.

Lemons is a hack. His claims are over the top, his goal is to incite irrational contempt and to foment distrust of government, all for the sake of increasing readership, for selling a few more ads, for getting a few extra bucks in his paycheck.

What I sound like is what I am - a journalist come lawyer who, while disliking Pearce, thinks people should be measured on the merits of their actions, not those acts imagined by an Internet blogger.

Your post reveals you for what you truly are - a "for us or against us" fool, in the mold of GWB, who doesn't believe there can be a variety of opinion or shades of grey within argument.

I'm a progressive, I'm a fan of the PNT (and largely of Lemons). I also recognize yellow journalism when I see it and know the perils it foretells.

(Use google if any terms here are foreign to you.)

welter
welter

I recognized all of your terms without having to use Google, but a real journalist should at least think about using a dictionary before writing a phrase like "journalist come (sic) lawyer". FYI, I'm a reader cum orthographer, and I recognize yellow orthography when I see it.

Adrian Cruz
Adrian Cruz

Kit, so what "actions" should we measure Pearce by? Beating his wives, committing fraud while in charge at MVD, raising Neo Nazi offspring who beat their kids, completely fabricating "facts" while on national T.V.? Or just the fact that he hasn't done anything while in the legislature that has benefitted Arizona?

Kit Carson
Kit Carson

With the exception of beating his wife - and heretofore unproven claim, and the sins of his son (who is an adult) I think all of them are fair game, and directly in line with what political debate should include.

Let me ask you: do you still beat your wife?

Lemons knows that sometimes it is the question that makes the story, not the response, as your post confirms.

In his effort to build antipathy for Pearce, Lemons has filled your head with inflammatory, but non-relevant accusations and insinuations. He writings on Pearce epitomize yellow journalism.

Please, Chad and DeeDee, let us know where your circulators will be. I live (and vote) in LD18 and want to be one of the first to sign.

> "Hell, even Sheriff Arpaio seems like a teddy bear compared to the truculent madman from Mesa."

Uh-huh. Pearce has cost the state north of $45 million in lawsuits? Has been targeted by international human rights groups for his actual -- not potential -- treatment of prisoners? Has conspired to have his political enemies arrested on trumped-up or baseless charges?

Of course not. Pearce is bad for AZ, but he's no Arpaio.

Lemons' hate for Pearce has eclipsed mere yellow journalism and now lives in the land of hyperbole and make believe.

Pearce is bad for Arizona, but Lemons is a hack who has no credibility when reporting on this issue.

ZachHenry
ZachHenry

I tend to agree. I'm about as far from being a supporter of SB1070 as it gets, but calling it a "breathing while brown" law crosses the line into distasteful hyperbole. The facts are bad enough, no need to obscure the issue with unneeded embellishment.

Kit Carson
Kit Carson

I actually like breathing while brown and think it a fair encapsulation of SB1070.

The law mandates, under threat of lawsuit, that every police officer who has a suspicion about the nationality of a person must investigate.

The illegal alien looks a lot like the 5th generation Hispanic-American, thus the police must investigate their nationality.

Sounds like breathing while brown to me.

Russell Pearce will be a difficult person to throw out of office due to his ability to strike fear in the hearts of his constituents.

He also has deep pockets, namely the Flaccid Fool of MCSO. It would not shock or surprise me in the least if we find out that the Old Balloon Head helps his good buddy, Pearce.

I want Pearce gone as much as anyone, especially with Governor Jan Brewer deep in Pearce's pocket. In turn, Pearce is deep in the MCSO shurf's pocket.

It's too bad he is not a subject to the federal grand jury looking into the Ancient One & Co. I would love to see Pearce do the perp-walk right along with his buddies, the MCSO shurf and Candy Andy.

Wow - how often does one get to see a loon in mid-development.

This is what yellow journalism foments: by exploiting, distorting, and exaggerating the news to create sensations and attract readers Lemons is gleefully taking the nutjobs out for a ride. Of course, should something bad happen, Lemons will claim no responsibility for the natural consequences of his writings.

When it comes time to negotiate his pay, Lemons will claim that journalism can change lives, stimulate the public conscious and b the voice of the down-trodden. When his words incite the loons, he'll claim all he does is write meaningless little articles that have no real affect, so don't blame him.

Hypocrisy and hyperbole are the twin pillars of Lemons these days. Shame is, he once was a pretty good columnist.
