10 Free Art Shows in Phoenix on First Friday, November 6

November's First Friday will be a night of firsts and lasts. It’ll be your first chance to see an exhibition in the new Carline Center, an adaptive re-use project by Harder Development, and your first chance to see an exhibition at the new Public Image located at Roosevelt Point. 

After November 6, two buildings on Roosevelt Row — including the current site for Paz Cantina — will be demolished to make way for new development. And a trio of shipping container galleries will be moved to a different space in Roosevelt Row. 

So it’s an especially good night to be out and about, exploring downtown Phoenix's changing landscape. Here are 10 free art shows to help you get started — and one not to miss on Saturday, November 7.

"Transforming Space"
Works by Joe Holdren and Yuko Yabuki are featured in this pop-up exhibition presented by {9} the Gallery and Artelshow at the Carline Center, a recently completed adaptive reuse project located at 1018 West Roosevelt Street. The exhibition includes large-scale works — including Holdren’s abstracts and Yabuki’s “modern interpretation of Japanese traditional symbolism.” Friday’s opening reception takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Find more information on the {9} The Gallery Facebook page.

"Frida in Focus"
A celebration of all things Frida Kahlo includes free admission to the Heard Museum, which recently opened an exhibition of photographs that belonged to Kahlo, and a mercado with works by local artists who are part of The Phoenix Fridas collective. First Friday’s event, which takes place from 6 to 10 p.m., also includes Frida-inspired dances choreographed by Liliana Gomez, music by Clandestino, and other activities. "Out of Line"
Works by Scott Wolf and Doug Bale are featured in this exhibition presented by Artelshow and Public Image, a new business that describes itself as "a collective assembled to make you look and feel your best." It's located on the ground floor of Roosevelt Point. Friday's opening reception takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Find more information on the Public Image Facebook page. 

"3 x 3"
Three artists share personal, and sometimes autobiographical, works at First Studio. Manny Burruel’s silkscreen prints feature nostalgic images reflecting memorial periods of his youth. Robert Denning’s multi-media works created with found objects, photographs, and his own drawings infuse common human experiences with textural elements. Galen Hasenpflug’s metal sculptures mixing new and old materials are meant as personal statement pieces. "Ofrenda"
The new Oscuro Collective presents an “exploration of death and mourning” through intermedia works, dance, theater, and musical performance at Fifth Row Dance Studio. Dance artist Angelina Ramirez, theater artist Steve Wilcox, and digital media artist Sam Angiulo will present their work alongside video-based works by several Arizona artists. "Ten: Modern Abstract"
Ten artists who create abstract works in diverse media — including painting, sculpture, mixed media collage, prints, and wood — are featured in this exhibition at monOrchid’s Shade Gallery meant to create “a truly sensory experience for the viewer.” Participating artists include Holly Anderson, Lora Barnhiser, Kevin Caron, Jeff Davis, Denise Fleisch, Thuong Nguyen, Daniel Shepherd, Sam Johnson, Dan Pederson, and Irma Sanchez. "Celebrating Life & Death through Art"
Works by mixed-media painter Veronica Verdugo-Lomeli filled with Dia de los Muertos imagery and Frida Kahlo-inspired art are featured in this exhibition at Olney Gallery, which reflects the influence of Mexican-American culture and life in the Southwest on her art. "Wandering"
Works by Shauna Thibault are featured in this exhibition at Chartreuse, which includes the artist’s large-scale ink wash pieces — which represent a departure from her prior body of work comprising primarily oil on wood paintings. "Never Without a Shadow"
New oil and collage works by Aileen Frick meant to convey “an uncommon view of the landscape of daily life” are featured in this exhibition at {9} The Gallery. The gallery will also be showing ceramic sculpture and installation work by Danielle Wood. "Los Vivos y Muertos-Espiritus, Esperanzas, y Sueños"
Marion Donaldson curates an exhibition of works by four artists who share a vibrant color palette. Artists Emily Costello, Frank Ybarra, Gennaro Garcia, and Joe Ray explore “the cycle of life and the triumph of the human spirit” at Practical Art. "Adios"
For its final exhibition in its current space, Palabra Collective presents the works of Josh Rhodes, Spencer Hibert, Kevin Aviles, Rebecca Green, the Fortoul Brothers, Sentrock, Kelsey Dake, Ashley Macias, Sammy Lambert, Yai, and Joshua Brizuela.
