ASU Art Museum announced on on Monday, September 22, that Garth Johnson is its new curator of ceramics.

Johnson, who has a bachelor of fine arts from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master's from Alfred University, is a a director-at-large on the board of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. He has worked as curator of artistic programs at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. Previously, he served as an associate professor at College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California.

Johnson begins his curatorship in December 2014, replacing longtime ceramics curator Peter Held, who retired at the end of June 2014.

"Joining the ASU Art Museum and the Ceramics Research Center has been a dream of mine for quite some time," Johnson says in the museum's news release. "The mission of the museum and the strengths of the ceramics collection dovetail perfectly with my research, writing and curating. I look forward to joining such a vibrant, creative community."

The public will have a chance to meet Johnson from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, for the free closing reception of "These Are Some of My Favorite Things," the final show Held curated for the museum, at the ASU Art Museum Brickyard.
