You can't pick a bad day to go to a museum; not much beats the option to see great artwork in a cool place.

But today carries extra incentive: A few of our own museums are celebrating International Museum Day, aimed to raise public awareness about the role museums play in our neighborhoods and communities - and to reel in a few visitors with discounts and special events.

Here are three you'll want to stop by ...

3. The Desert Caballeros Western Museum Photographer Scott Baxter has spent the last few years 100 Arizona ranchers whose families have been in the industry for 100 years or more. He's been taking notes and large-format, black-and-white photographs while on the road (and often on the back of a horse) since 2004.

Baxter has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. Through 100 Years / 100 Ranchers, which opens this week at the The Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Baxter hopes to capture each ranch's history and lifestyle before it's lost to development or poor economy. Admission to the museum today is free.

2. The Hasbrouck Insect Collection at Arizona State University There are more than 700,000 insect specimens, representing at least 25 orders, 390 families, 4,000 genera, 10,000 species and 1,240 subspecies on the Arizona State University Campus, and today, they're all on display.

Dr. Nico Franz and Dr. Sangmi Lee and their students will be guiding visitors of all ages through a series of display cases and stations that explain the variety of insects and current projects. To schedule a tour, bisit the collection website.

1. Arizona Museum of Natural History The Arizona Museum of Natural History is celebrating Museum Day as well as its 35th birthday with free admission, entertainment and live music during the day, activities by Bookmans and a birthday party tonight from 6 to 9 pm..
