The Arizona prison inmate hit by a truck this morning has been identified as 47-year-old Cary Allan -- and yesterday just happened to be his birthday.

A repeat customer of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Allan's current prison stint is a 27-month sentence for credit-card fraud out of Maricopa County.

DOC spokesman Barrett Marson tells New Times that as of a few hours ago, Allan was still alive.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves, Allan was on a work detail picking up trash in the emergency shoulder of the freeway when the wind carried the bag he was using into the westbound lane of the highway.

Allan, Graves says, chased after the bag and was hit by a truck carrying a horse trailer.

He taken to a hospital in extremely serious condition.

According to court records, Allan has two prior felony convictions dating back to 1994.
