53. Tri-Tip Sandwich at Grassroots Kitchen at Tap

Though it’s elusive — as in, not a regular menu item, but rather a regularly featured special — the tri-tip sandwich at Grassroots Kitchen and Tap is worth a try. If you like steak but aren’t familiar with tri-tip, know that this cut of meat might be one of the most underrated out there. It’s got a perfect balance between being both lean and flavorful, and when cooked correctly (as in low and slow), it makes an excellent filler for a steak sandwich.

This is something chef Christopher Collins understands. That’s why he keeps his tri-tip sandwich simple, with just a touch of housemade steak sauce, meat, and locally baked bread. The spicy sauce adds an element of heat to the dish but lets the meat be the star of the show. Cooked in a smoker and finished in the oven, Collins’ tri-tip comes out perfectly pink in the middle, fully cooked but still moist.

So, the bad news is you can’t get this sandwich all the time at either the Phoenix or Scottsdale location of Grassroots Kitchen and Tap. The good news is that it does appear from on a semi-regular basis. The even better news is that there’s a tri-tip sandwich on the menu at Collins’ other restaurant, Twisted Grove. And though I haven’t ventured up there to see if it stacks up, I’m hopeful it will.
