​With the holiday season on the horizon (yes, the holiday decorations have arrived at Costco ... and Ikea), it might be time to bring out your crafty side with the help of some local talent. 

Here are five local classes that will teach you how to use those pinking shears, felt swatches, and paper goods (think cozy scarves, paper goods, and sweet crystal mementos) -- no experience required. 

5. Crystalline Workshop with Sarah Hurwitz
On October 22, from 2 to 4 p.m., local artist Sarah Hurwitz is hosting a free workshop at the Civic Center Library. She asks that attendees bring small mementos, photographs, and other trinkets to create a small painting, or crystal-shaped culture. The Civic Center Library is at 3839 N. Drinkwater Boulevard (the workshop will be in the lower level auditorium). To reserve a spot, RSVP at the Library's website

4.  Tight Knit Tuesday at a.ware Studio and Store

The folks of a.ware are hosting their first Tight Knit Tuesday on October 25 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This one-hour lesson will teach you some sweet knitting skills, and offer some camaraderie with yarn wielding members of the community. The cost of lesson is $10, and you can bring your own supplies (they do sell some pretty knits and needles at the shop their shop if your in need of new supplies, though). 

3. Up-Cycling Gift Wrapping at Art Intersection

Learn how to totally embarrass friends and family in the gift-wrapping department this season with the skills you pick up on October 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Learn unique, and eco-friendly ways to dress up packages for family and friends. The cost of the class is $38. Art Intersection is located at 207 N Gilbert Rd Suite 201. For more information call 480-361-1118.

2. Open Knit at Practical Art

All knitters are welcome to bring their current knitting projects to an Open Knit on Saturday, October 22 and 29 from 2 to 3 p.m.. The meet-up is free to attend, is open to all levels of knitters (it's OK if you're an amateur, or if you have super knitting skills). Practical Art is located at 5070 N. Central Ave., and for more information call 602-264-1414.

1. Recycled papermaking at a.ware Studio and Store

Bring some of your old junk mail to a.ware on November 6, and be prepared to leave with pretty paper. The creatives at the Phoenix art studio/storefront say the class can get a little messy, but that the results can be used in gift wrapping, book binding, and countless other projects for the holidays and beyond. The class is from 1 to 4 p.m, and costs $45.
