Ask any of the 10 women showing artwork at Chandler's Vision Gallery this summer which famous artist they’d like to paint their reality and their answer will be simple and unanimous: Frida Kahlo.
Kathy Cano Murillo, Emily Costello, Anita Mabante Leach, Carmen Guerrero, Michele Delgado, Ana Lisa Rios, Gloria Martinez, Monique Sanderson-Mata, Veronica Verdugo-Lomeli, and Diana Calderon are the Phoenix Fridas, a group of local artists who celebrate and and draw inspiration from Kahlo in countless exhibitions they create and workshops they lead.
On view through Friday, August 3, the Fridas' exhibition "I Paint My Own Reality" honors the time Kahlo spent painting her surroundings -- natural and supernatural -- in La Casa Azul. The free show opens 10 East Chicago Street Friday, June 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes each woman’s interpretation of her own surroundings and reality. During its run will be a number of workshops, cooking demos, and a birthday celebration for Frida.
Fri., June 15, 6 p.m.; Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m. Starts: June 15. Continues through Aug. 3, 2012
