39. Hummus at Princess Market
You’ve probably never has hummus as good as the hummus at Princess Market in Mesa. This family-owned and -operated restaurant and market can be found in a Mesa strip mall, but its selection of affordable and above-average Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food makes it a worthwhile destination.
Start your meal — whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner — with an order of the housemade hummus. Through magic or expertise, the restaurant whips its chickpea dip to a fluffy consistency that’s light as air. And the flavors blend together in harmony: richness from tahini and nuttiness from the chickpeas that’s cut with a hint of lemon and embraced by a drizzle of sweet, smooth olive oil. Scooped up with warm flatbread, this starter easily can become a whole meal — though it’s not a bad idea to save room for the rest of Princess Market’s highly enjoyable menu.
If it’s a bit of a trek for you to make it to Princess Market, you can take home the hummus in tubs. The owners are also launching hummus sales at local farmers markets; that business should pick up in full swing once the weather cools down.
