41. Whole Chicken at El Pollo Supremo

The next time you’re in Tempe with a group of two or three friends and hungry, head to El Pollo Supremo, a small restaurant you’ve probably passed dozens of times. Located in the strip mall on University and Ash, it’s often overlooked by those who beeline to Cartel for coffee, or Buffalo Exchange, which can be found just next door. It’s a shame more students don’t know about this longstanding restaurant, because the food is excellent and bargain-basement cheap. 

A whole mesquite charcoal-broiled chicken sets you back about $14, including tax. And with eight pieces of juicy meat, it’s about enough food to fill two or three diners. The order even comes with beans, salsa, and tortillas — they’ll ask if you’d prefer corn or flour; I happen to like the latter. The bright red pieces of chicken offer beautiful, crispy skin that covers moist meat tinged with just the right amount of spice. Accompanied with a heavy dose of the housemade salsa (an extra serving of which will cost you another 85 cents), it’s a perfectly simple meal that’s designed to be shared.
