Each week Gem features one standout piece from a local shop. Whether it's a jacket, necklace, or handbag, it's on our have-to-have list.

What: This vintage canvas shoulder bag is just one of many fun accessory finds at Metro Retro in the Melrose district of downtown Phoenix. The seemingly plastic tortoise snap closure makes the would-be granny bag a little younger and weirder -- a mix of borderline ironic whimsy combined with unexpected, harder details.

We could see a Chloe Sevigny-type toting this around during a casual day out or to a small garden party in spring.

Where: Metro Retro

Cost: $25

Style this gem after the jump.

Style It: Since you probably don't want to wait for spring to tote this gem, here's an easy way to carry it in winter: Super casually with dotted Wolford tights, platform loafers, and splashes of color in a lavender cardi, canary yellow studs, and teal fingerless biker gloves.

Keep Phoenix New Times Free... Since we started Phoenix New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
