While the sign outside of Smashboxx still happens to be glowing, the proprietors of the Scottsdale DJ haven and dance joint have pulled the plug on the place. After three years in operation, which seems to be the average lifespan for most nightspots in the 'Dale these days, the Indian Plaza club is now closed.
According to it's Facebook page, Smashboxx shut its doors this past weekend after one final rager on Friday, May 2, featuring British electro-house duo Jack Beats. It was dubbed as the "grand finale" for the spot.
A farewell message was posted the next day, offering many thanks to its patronage.
Although no exact details as to why Smashboxx was getting smashed out of existence, we're guessing that its owners, Tempe-based nightlife company Full Moon Management, want to transform the place into something new. Their Facebook farewell mentions that the property will be rebooted and renovated into a new concept that will reopen "sometime next fall."
As they're wont to do, thousands of Scottsdale thrillseekers and club goers came to Smashboxx every weekend throughout its three-year-plus lifespan to get, um...smashed, as well as to hit up its dance floor (which underwent a renovation along with its lighting and sound system in 2012).
The spot also infamously featured a video booth, entitled the "Hottboxx" where inebriated patrons could record their drunken exploits, which were then pimped on Smashboxx's social media for posterity (not to mention future embarrassment).
Like practically every nightlife-oriented business in Scottsdale's entertainment district, Smashboxx featured weekly spin sessions by local DJs, including regulars and residents like Jon Amaral, D-JR, Jen Jones, Noah Wylie.
It also hosted a slew of well-known touring DJs -- thanks in part to the fact the local EDM promoter kings Relentless Beats dug the spot -- such as Hardwell, Alvaro, Moguai, Robbie Rivera, Felix Cartal, and freakishly named Lazerdisk Party Sex.
Steven Chung of Scottsdale, who performed at Smashboxx regularly as both DJ Tranzit and DJ Juheun, told Up On the Sun that he'll miss the place.
"Hands down one of the best clubs in Old Town," he says. "[It] was definitely my favorite place to spin at. So many memories and so many great times."
