We can thank crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter for two things. One, the digitalization of businesses hitting you up for money, and two, a few really cool local businesses. It's a double-edged sword.
Now, local cupcake-catering business Our Lady of Cupcakes has taken to the Internet (with a pretty funny video) to raise some funds.
You might remember the tattoo-loving, cupcake-slinging ladies of Our Lady of Cupcake from Chef Chat a few months ago when they talked about taking on Sprinkles and the difficulties of being a small business in a weak economy.
Well, apparently their struggles aren't over. Now we find them and an animated cupcake (with a very confusing mix of accents) going the crowd-funding route in hopes of gathering $10,000 for a delivery vehicle.
Other mobile food outlets including the Uprooted Kitchen have used similar campaigns to raise money -- some have worked; some haven't. But between their dancing cupcake and the seriously messed-up car these ladies feature in their video, Our Lady of Cupcakes might have a fighting chance of getting their campaign supported.
They've raised under 20 percent of their goal ($10,000) and have about a month and a half left to go.
In exchange for support owners Katie True and Lisa Even offer "Noms," or free cupcake coupons. Also available are "Wearable Noms" and "Nom Bling," as in shirts and jewelry.
