The photographer, who also shoots photos for our sister blog, Chow Bella, is the recipient of the Arizona Commission on the Arts' 2010 Artist Project Grant, is currently one of the City of Phoenix's selection for this year's ongoing 7th Avenue Streetscape public art project, and is working on a new body of manipulated photographs and digital collage work for exhibition at an unspecified date early next year.
When you put your key in the ignition and turn on the radio, what station would play right now? KJZZ. I'm addicted to NPR!
What's the first album you bought? Pretty sure it was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, by The Smashing Pumpkins -- the day it came out, on double cassette!
What's the first concert you saw? Tool and the Melvins at the Phoenix Convention Center, way back in 1998.
What's your favorite concert you've ever been to? Electric Eclectics festival in Meaford, Ontario -- 3 days of experimental sound art and music in the Ontario countryside. This year was my second year going, and I was lucky enough to get to play it with the analog electronic music project I'm a part of, Elektrobahn.
What's the last song played on your music player? Kraftwerk, "It's More Fun to Compute". I know I look like a dork blasting this at stoplights, but I just don't care.
Preferred format: CD, vinyl, cassette, 8-Track or digital? I love the large size album artwork and the tactile quality of vinyl, but digital is just so damn convenient. I also have a soft spot for 1/4-inch reel-to-reel tape! Anything you can remix with some scotch tape and a pair of scissors has to be awesome.
What's your favorite album? Depends on my mood. Underworld's Beaucoup Fish is a classic I can always listen all the way through, and great on long drives thru the desert.
Who is your favorite singer or band? Kraftwerk! I couldn't listen to them 24/7, but just about everything in my collection owes a huge debt to them.
Does you computer track how many times you've played something -- if so,
what's at the top of the list? "Secrets and Lies," by Emmon -- great Swedish electropop that's impossible to get out of my head.
What is your favorite new album from 2011? Ford & Lopatin's Channel Pressure -- great fractured '80s synth cheese nostalgia with a warped cyberpunk edge. Also, pretty sure they snuck into my room to shoot their album cover.
What one song would you play if you had a world-wide radio audience? Tangerine Dream's "Phaedra" in its 18-minute entirety. I think we can all benefit from a bit of navel-gazing from time to time. It may expand some minds!
Who is your favorite local artist? With so much amazing talent here, it's incredibly hard to pick, but my good friend DJ Pablo Gomez comes to mind. Check out Signal Flow, his weekly adventurous electronic mixes on Radio Phoenix.
What is your favorite local venue to see music? The Cathedral Room in the Icehouse -- definitely not the most traditional, but certainly the most beautiful.
What is your favorite music video? "Anyway You Choose to Give It" by The Black Ghosts. I love the utilitarian, industrial look of the robots and kinetic sculptures in the video -- they look like something I could build from the old computers in my attic. And the song is catchy as hell!
